New Article: Bassin' for Otter Creek Rainbows

Description
Otter Creek Reservoir is one of Utah's best rainbow trout waters. It also has a few browns. It is a popular summer fishery and also offers good ice fishing action. It has a concrete boat ramp and very nice developed campground.

Location
South central Utah along Hwy 62, about 14 miles east of the town of Junction. The nearest larger town is Richfield.
215 miles from Salt Lake City
240 miles from Las Vegas

Primary Species
Rainbow trout, with a few brown trout and smallmouth bass

Special Regulations
General statewide regulations apply here. Otter Creek Reservoir harbors whirling disease; please be aware to not spread it.

Seasonal Factors
Ice usually becomes safe for ice fishing in early or mid December. April usually brings fishable open water. Bait fishing from shore is good in April, May and June, and then again in the fall. Trout move deep during the heat of summer and so you need to go deep using downriggers, leaded line, jigs or some other technique.

Lures and Techniques
Traditional trout baits are effective here, as are small lures (Jakes, Mepps, Panther Martin, etc). Flies (leach patterns, woolly buggers) also work well. For bigger fish, try putting a dead minnow on the bottom or troll Rapalas. Jigs tipped with bait are also very productive.

The East Fork of the Sevier River below Otter Creek usually offers good action for browns, rainbows and cutthroat. Private property restricts access in many spots but there is some public access.
