What's New

Rockport Ice Fishing
I enjoyed ice fishing at Rockport Reservoir Saturday. The weather was perfect, actually warm during the middle of the day. I shed my jacket for awhile, but put it back on when the breeze picked up. Ice was clear and hard and about 6 inches thick. (See my photos.)

Fishing was spotty. We started about 11 am and quit about 2:30. Success was good during the first hour. After that we worked pretty hard for each fish. We were on the SW side of the reservoir, about half a mile above the dam.

All the fish we caught were down about 20 feet. We tried other depths without any luck.

We had a bunch of kids with us and they had fun sledding down the steep bank onto the ice.

Rain And Sun
It is raining right now at my home in Springville. Warm temps are expected this weekend, with more rain/snow mix coming Sunday. This warm spell probably won’t be enough to weaken ice but use caution.

Ice Fishing Tip
DWR has this good new article with basic tips for ice fishing.

In addition, ice fishing information is available in two videos produced by the DWR and in the first part of an audio interview with Drew Cushing. You can see the videos at www.youtube.com/UDWR. The audio interview is available at wildlife.utah.gov/dwr/multimedia/podcasts.html.

Fishing Overview

Good basic ice fishing information can be found in this Utah DWR article.

Fish Lake has produced the best reports this week. Most ice fishers there are enjoying fast action for nice splake, rainbows and perch.

The Flaming Gorge Burbot Bash is producing quite a stir, with $10,000 in prizes. It is an ice fishing event in the Buckboard area on the Wyoming side of the big reservoir. It will be held on Jan 22.

The Bear Lake Cisco Disco will also be Jan 22. That annual event happens during the cisco spawn, when people use dip nets to catch the small fish.

Rockport Invitational Ice Fishing Derby will be held Jan 20.

At last report, Deer Creek and Jordanelle still had some open water. Both reservoirs also had spots with safe ice and fair fishing. Use caution.

Lake Powell striper fishing is very good, considering it is the middle of winter. DWR says some people are jigging in the Bullfrog area, catching large numbers of fish. More info.
