What's New

Get Your Boat Fixed Now
Is your boat ready for spring fishing? Walleye fishing will begin in March at Utah Lake and Willard Bay, and that will approach rapidly now. Don't wait until the last minute, get any needed repairs done now.

I recommend Halstrom's Marine for fishing boat sales and service. They sell top of the line Triton bass and fish/ski boats and they are Mercury Marine certified for repairs. To give anglers a break in this tough economy, they have rolled back retail labor rates to the level they were at before 9-11.

Halstrom's has just launched a new website.

Red Rock Hiking
It almost felt like spring today. Another small storm will blow into northern Utah this weekend, but temperatures will climb into the low 60s F in St George on Saturday.

So guess where I'm going? I have a business appointment in sunny St George on Saturday and so I'll take a little extra time and hike into the red rocks. Should be a nice break.

Burbot Bash
If I wasn't heading south I'd go to Flaming Gorge and participate in the Burbot Bash Fishing Derby. It's for a good cause, and carries some nice prize money.

Fishing Overview

Warm temperatures are starting to impact ice fishing. Echo Reservoir has developed open water along the shoreline in some spots. Use caution there and at other lower-elevation waters.

Strawberry, Scofield and our other major trout fisheries have thick ice and will not be affected, beyond maybe the snow on top turning slushy. But be careful at Utah Lake, Willard Bay, Deer Creek, Rockport and similar waters.

Anglers have been pounding popular spots and fishing has slowed in many areas. Now, the best action will be found away from the easy access spots. Fish may also be conditioned to avoid noisy places. Get away from the crowds and avoid tromping on the ice. If you use a snowmobile, expect the fish to be skittish for a few minutes, until the vibrations abate.

Burbot Bash Fishing Derby will be this Saturday at Buckboard, on the Wyoming side of Flaming Gorge. The event has been getting a lot of press because fishery managers hope people will learn to catch the destructive, non-native fish.

Rockport Invitational Ice Fishing Derby will be Jan 29.

Lake Powell guru Wayne Gustaveson has posted this mid-winter fishing report. He says striped bass have moved shallow in their search for food. Winter fishing there has been better than normal.

DWR is requesting help catching perch and pike though the ice at Yuba, to use to complete a fish disease-free certification. Details.

DWR has more good ice fishing tips.
