What's New

Get Your Boat Fixed Now
Is your boat ready for spring fishing? Walleye fishing will begin in March at Utah Lake and Willard Bay, and that will approach rapidly now. Don't wait until the last minute, get any needed repairs done now.

I recommend Halstrom's Marine for fishing boat sales and service. They sell top of the line Triton bass and fish/ski boats and they are Mercury Marine certified for repairs. To give anglers a break in this tough economy, they have rolled back retail labor rates to the level they were at before 9-11.

Events
St George Winter Bird Festival is Jan 27-30

Bald Eagle Day is Feb 12. Biologists will help people observe and learn about bald eagles.

Incredible Story
An angler says a bald eagle flew up and stole two fish off the ice. Details.

Spring-Like Weather
It feels like spring to me. Snow is melting from my yard and daytime temperatures are almost balmy.

It was super nice in St George last weekend. We hiked in our shirt sleeves, enjoying the sunshine. I had some youngsters with me and we didn't do anything too strenuous, just really enjoyed getting out of town, away from the ice smog.

The coming weekend looks good and most days next week are expected to be sunny and mild. Temperatures may hit 65 in St George.

I've got to get some work done around the house this weekend. I'm dying to go do a serious desert hike and I hope to schedule that for the first weekend in February. I want to jeep and hike into some Anasazr ruins down near the town of Bluff.

Fishing Overview

Ice fishing success has slowed at many waters. There are still plenty of fish biting but you have to work to catch them. The easy access points have been fished hard and so the best success will be found by hiking or snowmobiling to more remote spots.

The best recent reports have come from these waters:
- Fish Lake for splake, rainbows, perch
- Pineview for perch, some crappie
- Rockport for rainbows
- Deer Creek for rainbows

Strawberry has been fickle - good for a few folks but slow for others. That's pretty typical for this time of year.

Our weather has been mild, and forecasters say that will continue. Low-elevation ice could become unsafe so use caution.

Ice fishermen had to be rescued from a drifting ice floe at Flaming Gorge. Details.

Some reservoirs may start filling soon and that often results in thin ice ringing shore lines. Thick ice floats away from shore as the lake level rises. The water replacement water freezes, but that ice hasn't had a chance to get thick. Use caution.

Slush may soon become a problem on top of ice.
