What's New

Lake Powell
I really enjoyed fishing Lake Powell last weekend. The weather was perfect – warm enough to get a little sunburn. Fishing was good but not great for us. We were uplake, working the White Canyon/Farley Canyon area. There are many shad in that area and so the fish were fat and healthy, but not particularly hungry. We had to work for each one we caught. See my report and photos.

We took a day and jeeped into The Maze area of Canyonlands National Park. The lower access road is near Hite. We hoped to reach the Doll House, but ran out of time. That is incredible big, rough country. See my blog and photos.

Fall Walleye
I'm excited to fish Deer Creek, now that I've heard about all the walleye the DWR found there during their recent survey. I release most of the fish I catch, but at Deer Creek I don't mind harvesting a walleye or two. The fish are fun to catch and very tasty.

Walleye have a reputation for being hard to catch. They are actually not that difficult, if you get lures down to their level. The challenge comes because they usually stay near structure – usually near the bottom. The old saying goes, “If you aren't getting snags you aren't fishing for walleye.” Jigging is effective because jigs imitate small fish – which walleye love – and because jigs are cheap and so people don't hesitate to get them down into structure. Crankbaits are also effective.

I have an electric trolling motor that lets my boat move very slowly. I think I'll use it as I jig along the bottom in relatively deep water, getting right down into the rocks.

Fishing Overview

Strawberry fishing really turned on last week and most people are reporting good success. Fish are spread throughout the reservoir and are aggressively taking all sorts of lures and baits. Many people are having success fishing Lucky Craft Pointer Minnows. The best reports come from people fishing from boats, but shore fishermen are also catching good numbers of fish. This is an excellent time to walk the shorelines and cast to trout.

Our other trout reservoirs are also fishing well right now. This is an excellent time to fish for trout in Utah.

On our streams, blue wing olives are hatching and provide good surface action. Fishing is actually best on cool, stormy days. Nymphs continue to work deep and streamer fishing can be very good. Talk to the guys in the fly shops to get the latest tips.

Lake Powell striper fishing is red hot on the lower lake. From Good Hope Bay down to Wahweap, fish are hungry and are relatively easy to catch. Above Good Hope, shad are abundant and so the stripers are well fed and more difficult to catch. For tips, read the excellent report by Wayne Gustaveson.

Sand Hollow Reservoir has good bass fishing right now. Northern Utah bass waters are still productive but that action will fade soon as the weather turns colder.

At Deer Creek Reservoir, many large walleye turned up in the latest fish survey. Fall is a great time to fish for walleye at Deer Creek and other waters. Starvation and Willard Bay usually offer good fall walleye action.
