Deer Creek
I caught many small rainbows at Deer Creek this week, but I couldn't connect on a walleye. I fished during the late afternoon, in warm sunshine, and had a great time.
I specifically targeted walleye. They are most active during low-light periods – early morning and late evening – because they are sensitive to bright light. Mornings are often best but evenings can also be very good. We launched at about 4 pm and trolled until the sun sank low in the sky. Caught rainbows on everything we tried – mostly 9-12 inch fish. They were fat and healthy.
As the shadows lengthened we angled the boat along rocky shorelines and trolled near the bottom, but just caught bows. We stopped and cast jigs into the rocks, but couldn't connect with anything. We also tried jigging vertically in deeper water but again no takers.
It was a beautiful day to be out. See my photos and fishing report.
What's Next
As the storms clear, I'll make a pilgrimage up to Strawberry and try to catch some of those slot-busting cutts.
After that, I hope to get back to Flaming Gorge for one last major open-water trip.

Fishing Overview
Snow is expected in the high country this weekend, for the opening of the general season rifle deer hunt. Take care if you go out.
Cool, wet, stormy weather will continue for several days. Looks like our warm, dry fall is coming to an end. But there will yet be many pleasant, mild days to fish, hike and enjoy other outdoor activities before winter sets in. Get out and enjoy.
Fly fishing will be great using Blue Wing Olives on stormy days. Streamers are coming on strong right now and they will also provide good action for the next few weeks. Brown trout will begin nesting about now so watch that you don't tromp through the redds.
Strawberry Reservoir has been a hot spot, with very good reports coming from people casting Pointers and other minnow-imitating lures. That action should continue through the fall. We're moving into a period when conditions will be miserable some days, but other days will be very nice. Get out when the weather cooperates.
Most of our reservoirs and streams offer good fishing right now.
Lake Powell is finally cooling enough to spark fall feeding frenzies. Here's the latest from Wayne Gustaveson: “Lots of rain this week will create some absolutely beautiful waterfalls tumbling off the cliffs walls surrounding Lake Powell. Cooler days will finally cool the water into the 60s. Cooler water will bring the best fishing period of the Fall for all species.” Read his full report.
Lake Powell launch ramp open hours are being reduced for the winter season. Details.
