What's New

Utah Rocks
I spent most of the past week driving backroads in the great state of Iowa, visiting my in laws. Along the way I noticed those the poor people who live there don't have any rocks. I drove for miles, past fields of corn growing in rich, deep, black soil, without a rock in sight. How can people enjoy a full life without rocks?

Thankfully, Utah has plenty and I'll be hiking over them and climbing on them during next few weeks. Fall is my favorite time to hike southern Utah desert areas.

Where to Fish?
Strawberry is my top choice. I'll watch the weather and get up there soon. I'll probably leave the boat home and walk the shorelines, casting Pointers and other minnow-imitating lures. There is fog up there many mornings and it is hard to fish until it burns off, so you don't have to get up too early.

Flaming Gorge is also a good choice. I hope to do an overnight trip to the Gorge in mid-November and try to catch a big lake trout or two.

Fishing Overview

Strawberry has yielded another big cutthroat, which is being called a "fish of a lifetime." Photo and details.

Fishing is very good at The 'Berry, and at most other trout reservoirs. Fishing will hold up for the next several weeks, even after ice and snow make it unpleasant and anglers hang up their rods.

Fly fishing is good on our streams using streamers, small BWO patterns and standard nymphs. Brown trout are spawning so take care not to disturb them (don't wade through their nests). Whitefish are being caught occasionally.

Lake Powell guru Wayne Gustaveson has issued his final fishing report of the season, saying bass fishing is now at its fall peak. He gives tips on winter fishing at the big lake: "An unexpected winter bonus is an exceptional crappie fishery in the far reaches of the San Juan, Escalante and Hite areas... Walleye fishing will be decent all winter in the Hite area..." Read his complete report.

Deer hunting regulation changes are being proposed for 2011. To improve hunting, fewer hunters may be allowed. Interested people are invited to attend and provide input. Details.
