What's New
Powell's Stripers
Lake Powell conditions will be perfect this weekend, so that's where I'm heading. I plan to fish the Hite area, trolling and jigging for stripers. Might even find a late-season surface boil.
Here's what Lake Powell guru Wayne Gustaveson is saying about fishing: “It finally happened! Cold wet weather arrived making it very hard to get out and do any fishing. But it is anticipated that this change in weather will bring surface water temperature down into the magical 60 degree range. It's now time. The best fall fishing will prevail for the next two weeks.”
Wayne recommends searching for stripers by trolling deep diving lures. When you find a school, continue to troll over it or pull up and jig. That's what we will be doing.
The Maze
While in the area, we plan to take a day and jeep into The Maze, a remote part of Canyonlands National Park. We plan to hike from The Maze Overlook down into the labyrinth and find the famous Harvest Scene rock art panel. Should be fun.
If I wasn't fishing Powell, I'd be up at Strawberry on Saturday. Maybe I'll go up there next week, if it isn't raining or blowing too hard.

Fishing Overview
Utah's rifle elk hunt begins Saturday and the general-season deer hunt is coming up fast. With all the hunters out, not as many people will be fishing. And that just as fall fishing picks up on many waters.
Strawberry's fabulous fall fishing is now starting. All kinds of lures will take fish but many people like to cast large bass-style lures that imitate minnows. Lucky Craft's Pointer is a favorite. Fish will be ranging freely in the cool water. Many anglers like to work the shorelines at this time of year, but fish will also be caught over deep water. If you want to catch a big cutthroat, now's the time.
Other trout reservoirs also have good fishing right now. Scofield has been very good.
Flaming Gorge lake trout will be moving toward spawning areas. Remember, beginning Oct. 15 Linwood Bay will be closed to fishing between sunset and sunrise. Trophy lake trout are often caught during the last couple weeks of October.
Trout streams are in transition. Summer bugs are going away and it is difficult to product what patterns will be effective. Talk to the guys in the fly shops for the latest info.
Lake Powell fall fishing will peak during the next couple weeks. Since the water is now cooling, fish will be active and feed aggressively. Striper and bass fishing will be excellent all over the lake. Read Wayne Gustaveson's report for tips.
Sand Hollow bass are also becoming more active. Fishing should be good to very good there for the next several weeks.
