The photo above shows a huge burbot caught at Flaming Gorge in Wyoming Game and Fish gill nets. Burbot are a problem at The Gorge. Anglers catching burbot are required to kill them. They are good to eat, and are fairly easy to catch when there is ice on the water.

What's New

A world spearfishing record was broken recently when a guy took a 13.18 pound walleye at Deer Creek Reservoir. Details and photo.

Cut your own Christmas tree in one of Utah's forests. Details.

Anasazi Hunting
I need to get some photos at Mesa Verde National Park, and so I'm going to blast down there tomorrow - before the snowstorm. The park is open year-round, but snow makes it difficult to access some ruins during winter.

Next Week
I still want to fish Strawberry before it is totally shut down by ice and snow. I may be too late - after this weekend it may be virtually inaccessible until it gets solid ice. I'll check conditions as the storm ends next week.

If I can't get to Strawberry I'll probably fish Deer Creek. I've done well there this year. No big fish, but plenty of small ones.

As winter sets in, I bide my time and fish when the weather is mild. We should have several such windows during late November and early December.

Fishing Overview

Ice fishing enthusiasts are pushing the season and fishing Uinta Mountain lakes. They report solid ice on shallow lakes. At this report, you can still drive a 4X4 to some waters. That will probably change this weekend, when a major storm dumps on the area. After that you will probably need a snowmobile to get in.

If you want to ice fish the Uintas, now's the time. Ice will get very thick as the season progresses, to the point that is is virtually impossible to penetrate.

Ice fishing is still probably 2 or more weeks away at Scofield and other major waters. We've had so many warm days, the freeze may be slow coming.

Winter-like weather will come later this weekend. Friday and Saturday should offer decent conditions on our open water trout streams and reservoirs. Temperatures should be mild but winds may be strong . It looks like we will get snow later Saturday, and it will drop down into the valleys. After the storm, temperatures will become cold.
