Merry Christmas

I've been sitting by the fire, biding my time. I love fishing but not enough to venture out when conditions are miserable or dangerous.

During the next couple weeks we will move into the heart of the ice fishing season. I'll get up to Strawberry once or twice and I hope to get down to Fish Lake, targeting big fish in both waters.

I'll also do a little winter fly fishing, in both northern and southern Utah.

I resolve to average one fishing trip a week during the coming year. 2010 was good to me. Hopefully, 2011 will be better, for all of us.

Scofield Ice Fishing Tournament will be Jan 8.

Flaming Gorge Buckboard Burbot Bash Ice Fishing Derby will be Jan 22.

Bear Lake Cisco Disco will be Jan 22.

Fishing Overview

Few people fished during the big storm and so there are few new fishing reports. Now, as skies clear, air temperatures will fall and that will help firm up ice.

Strawberry still has lots of open water, with ice on some bays. Those who have fished there have caught nice fish but report miserable conditions. Deep snow, then deep slush on top of the ice.

The fishable ice will at Strawberry at Strawberry during the next few nights, but I doubt the entire lake will be frozen this weekend. If you go up there, wear waterproof boots and use caution.

Fishermen will have to battle deep snow in most areas in Utah. Avalanche danger is high on steep, backcountry slopes. Northern Utah streams are running high and southern Utah streams are at flood levels.

It was one heck of a storm. Zion National Park was closed on Tuesday because of flood danger. Zion Canyon has reopened and officials are checking roads and trails to assess damage.

A bridge washed out near the town of Gunlock, isolating that small community.

Recreation conditions will improve this weekend and, hopefully, continue to improve even with more storms coming next week.
