Spring Hiking
I enjoyed helping with a photography seminar last weekend in Arches National Park. We hiked around Delicate Arch, The Windows and Devils Garden. On the way home we explored in the NE area of the San Rafael Swell. Got some decent photos:

- Devils Garden

Spring Fishing
I need to stick close to home this weekend. I'll probably fly fish on one of the local streams.
Next weekend I plan to head to the St George area and fly fish some of the small streams down there. People often ask me for info on stream fishing in that area. If they want quality fishing I send them over to the Colorado at Lees Ferry.
If you don't mind busting through brush to catch small, wild trout, there are a few local streams that are fun to fish. The area had heavy flooding in December and I want to go see if it had any impact on my favorite spots.

Fishing Overview
Deer Creek ice is now pulling back. There is fishable open water around the Provo River inlet, and the size of the open area is growing larger every day.
At last report, ice is holding on Jordanelle, Rockport and Echo, but those waters will also open up during the next couple weeks. Fishing should be good on these waters as the ice pulls back.
Stream fishing is now picking up, with surface action for midges most afternoons. Blue wings are just starting to show up and they will become more prolific during the next few weeks. Fish can also be caught going deep with nymphs and glo bugs.
Weber River ran at flood stage earlier this week. Stream sections that are not protected by dams may be high so use caution if you get out.
Lake Powell striper fishing has been very spotty - good when you find active fish. The stripers will become more consistent as the water temperatures warm a bit. Meanwhile, nice largemouth bass are being caught by anglers pitching lures right into the brush. Smallmouth are just starting to stir and will start to provide good action in a couple weeks. April and May will bring very good fishing at the big lake.
There is still some ice fishing at Strawberry, Fish Lake and other high elevation waters.
DWR has a good new article with tips on fishing the Green River during spring.
The annual Utah Walleye Seminar will be March 19, from 7 to 9 pm, in the Department of Natural Resources auditorium, 1594 W. North Temple, Salt Lake City.
