Lake Powell Strategy
Peak spring fishing at Lake Powell will happen sometime during the next couple weeks and I plan to be there. So here's the question, "How do you plan for the best possible trip?"

Weather is a key factor. During springtime, fishing heats up and cools down with the weather. For the best fishing we need 3-4 days of warm, stable weather. I'm keeping my schedule flexible so I can take advantage of whatever the weatherman brings.

Next, what species of fish do you target? Smallmouth probably provide the most consistent action at this time of year, but stripers are not far behind. Pound for pound, I think smallmouth fight as well as any game fish in the world - they are fun to catch. But, stripers grow bigger and so they get my vote. Largemouth, walleye, crappie, bluegill - the lake has a wide variety of species so take your pick.

Where on the lake do you fish? The species you target will affect the places you choose to fish. You can catch smallmouth all over the lake but the upper Colorado arm and San Juan arm usually offer the fastest action.

For stripers, you have to decide if you want fast fishing or quality fish. Fishing can be incredible fast on the lower lake, but many fish caught will be skinny. On average, stripers caught from middle and upper lake areas will be bigger and fatter.

Decisions, decisions... However, at Powell you can't go wrong. I've never been to Powell without having fun. Even if the wind blows... I would enjoy the trip even if I just sat on the pier at the marina.

Water Canyon Waterfalls
Last Saturday I enjoyed hiking up Water Canyon, past several impressive waterfalls, as I continue my quest to photograph all significant waterfalls in Utah. See my Water Canyon photos, and my waterfalls gallery.

Water Canyon is located above Hilldale, on the Utah/Arizona border. Yes, Hilldale is the twin to Colorado City, where polygamist are making news. It was interesting to see women and girls in long, pioneer-style dresses out working in fields and yards. A totally different world...

Water Canyon is located just south of Zion National Park and it offers towering red cliffs and other Zion-like features. It is spectacular in itself. It provides access to the Canaan Mesa Wilderness Area, where you could backpack for days in solitude.

It was a fun outing.

Great Salt Lake Bird Festival
The annual festival runs May 12-16 this year.

Fishing Overview

Scofield Reservoir ice is finally pulling back. Earlier this week there was about 10 feet of open water around most of the shoreline. There is a large patch of open water near the dam and on the north and south ends of the lake. Fishing has been very good but most trout caught are small.

Deer Creek, Rockport, East Canyon and other northern Utah waters offer fair to good fishing. Otter Creek, Piute, Minersville and other southern Utah waters have been hit and miss, but all contain good numbers of fish and success should improve about now.

Streams are running high and are many sections are unfishable. The Weber now has high water, even between the dams. The Provo and Green are the best options for fly fishing.

Lake Powell fishing is red hot for striped bass, smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Crappie, walleye, catfish and bluegill are also being caught. Wayne Gustaveson reports, "Fishing success was hot last weekend on the San Juan but then faltered with the recent cold front. The next warming trend will bring that same fishing success to most of Lake Powell. Find water temperature exceeding 65 degrees and (bass) fishing should be super." Read his full report.

Utah Lake and Willard Bay offer good action for catfish and an occasional walleye. Willard also offers wipers. Many other waters have fair to good fishing. Read DWR's weekly fishing report for ideas.
