Rock Art
As a hobby, I enjoy hunting down ancient Native American rock art sites. I had to be in Vegas yesterday so I scheduled in a little extra time and explored several sites in that area. I took many photos but have not yet taken time to organize them. I'll get them posted and provide links in next week's report.

I'll stick close to home this Saturday - probably fish Scofield if it isn't too stormy. On June 19 I hope to hike to a newly discovered major rock art site deep in the Grand Canyon National Park backcountry. That should be an amazing trip.

Fly Fishing Fair
Western Rivers Flyfisher's annual Fly Fishing Fair will be June 12, at their shop in Salt Lake City: "This is our biggest day of the year: Free Clinics, Prizes, and always something on SALE. Take in a clinic on tying traditional Soft Hackles, Learning to Fly-Cast, Bugs 101, Fitting Sunglasses, Learn to Fly-fish, and more. Our Reps from Sage, Winston, Scott and Hardy will have all their rods set up for you to try, Guys from Simms and Cloudveil will also be here. There won't be a better day to get the lowdown on the gear you,re looking for to make the most of your fly-fishing experience."

Fishing Overview
High stream flows may continue for a couple more weeks, making fly fishing difficult in both northern and southern Utah. Many streams are blown out and muddy, but some stream sections are only marginally high and are fishable. Sections just below dams are often good bets. Conditions may change daily; get current reports by talking to the guys in the fly shops.

Logan River yielded a 30.5-inch, 15.5-pound brown trout on May 30. Gene Jones of Sunset, Utah, caught it at First Dam. DWR reports the fish was just over eight inches wide and had a girth of 21 inches. Jones caught the fish on a worm and 8-pound test line.

Fishing is good to very good at most of our trout lakes and reservoirs. We've heard good reports from Strawberry, Flaming Gorge, Fish Lake and Scofield. Many smaller waters also offer good fishing.

DWR reports surprisingly good fishing at Joes Valley Reservoir: "On May 23, DWR Lead Maintenance Specialist Duane Swasey caught a 31-inch splake on a black-and-silver Cotton Cordell Walley Diver. It weighed nearly 11 pounds. Swasey caught 14 other splake and used chub meat to catch one tiger trout in the 14- to 16-inch range. On May 21, Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator Dan Keller fished the reservoir with several friends. They had the most success with Berkley white and gray Gulps, a minnow imitator. The Gulps out fished chub meat, Rapalas and everything else they used. As a group, they caught eight to 10 fish per hour."

Starvation now offers good action for walleye and smallmouth bass. You may also catch a big brown trout there.

Utah Lake is hot for white bass and big channel catfish.

At Lake Powell, stripers have spawned and will now start feeding more aggressively. They will soon zero in on newly spawned shad in the backs of canyons. Striper fishing will get better and better during the next several weeks. Smallmouth bass fishing is still very good, and most other species provide great action. Powell's water is warm now - perfect for water sports. This is a great time to visit the big lake.
