Flaming Gorge Lake Trout

The photo above shows a monster lake trout recently caught at Flaming Gorge. It might have set a new Utah record had it been weighed properly instead of released quickly. More photos and details.

What's New

Lakes of the Uintas Booklets
Some years ago the DWR published a series of booklets providing maps and information about fishable lakes in the Uinta Mountains. The booklets are great - the best resource ever compiled for people who want to fish and backpack the mountains. Over the years, the booklets have become hard to find.

I have an incomplete set - 6 of the 10 booklets. I've scanned them to create pdf documents, and I've posted them on my website. The pdfs aren't perfect but they are readable. You can view and download them here.

If any of you have the booklets I'm missing, let me borrow them. I'll scan them and return the booklets unharmed.

Uintas Off the Trail
I am planning a trip to a little lake that is little-know, and not located on the trail. To find it you have to bushwhack into the backcountry. But the rewards are great - big cutthroat, some of the biggest in the mountains. I hope to get up there for an overnighter in early August. I can be a little flexible on the dates. Right now I still have room in the truck so let me know if you are interested.

It has never been easier to find lakes off the trail, thanks to GPS and Google Earth. Study books, articles and maps to identify a lake you would like to visit. Find in on Google Earth, which will give you the latitude and longitude. You can also get coordinates for landmarks along the trail. Program those into your gps and it will guide you to the lake.

On Google Earth, you can sometimes find lakes that are not on maps. But, in the Uintas, most of those will be shallow and will not have fish. Streams going into and out of those shallow little lakes may be productive fisheries.

Fishing Overview
Fly fishing continues to be very good on most waters. The Middle Provo is being fished hard because the popular drake hatch is underway. That means fewer fishermen on other streams, which are also very good. PMDs and caddis are the most common bugs out now. Some streams have a few golden stoneflies. Talk to the guys in the fly shops to learn about the best patterns for the water you want to fish.

Uinta Mountain streams have settled down to summer levels and offer great fly fishing. We're hearing lots of good reports about fishing there. With this hot weather, now's the time to hear up into the mountains.

Strawberry Reservoir action is now picking up. Fish will be moving deeper now but will still hit baits and lures that get down to their level. Fish shallow early and late and then go deep during the middle of the day.

Lake Powell striper fishing is good, with fish "boiling" as they feed on the surface. Boils are becoming more common, and fishing success will continue to improve during the next few weeks. DWR project leader Wayne Gustaveson reports, "My crew has returned from uplake and report that the best boils with catchable stripers that stay up the longest are found from Red Canyon to Trachyte. Read his weekly fishing report.

Lake Powell Hite fish cleaning station is now back in operation, as more boaters launch at the top of the lake.

Catfish love hot weather. Utah Lake, Willard Bay, the Bear River and other waters offer very good channel cat action.
