What's New

I took friends boating and tubing at Yuba over the weekend. Not as many people there as I had feared, considering the big holiday. Tubing was great. Saw lots of fish on the graph but didn't have time to chase them.

Skyline Drive
This weekend I plan to get out of the heat and hit some of the small lakes along Skyline Drive. I love that area. It is close, beautiful and has great fishing lakes and streams.

Lake Powell is Calling
If you only make one trip to Powell this year, do it during the next few weeks. Stripers are now boiling on the upper lake. Fishing is very good now and will get even better during the next couple weeks.

When you see a boil, you race over, cutting the throttle so you glide to within casting distance without scaring the fish. Cast a small, shad-imitating lure past the boil and then reel it through the active fish. The aggressive predators will often hit your lure again and again, until one becomes hooked.

When you find a big boil that stays up for 20 or 30 minutes, and you can often catch 20 or more fish in a short time. Great fun.

Read our Lake Powell articles for more details.

I'm still working out my schedule. I'll be fishing the boils the weekend of July 24, or July 31, depending on family activities. Right now I still have room in the boat. Let me know if you want to come.

Fishing Overview
Fly fishing is going strong on the blue ribbon trout streams in Idaho and Montana, now that flows have finally subsided and salmon flies are hatching. Fishing there will be very good during the next few weeks.

Utah's trout streams are also fishing well. The popular drake hatch is still going on the Middle Provo, but has now ended on other streams. PMDs, caddis and some stones are providing good action.

Green River trout are now eating terrestrials and other bigger bugs, and fishing is good.

Uinta Mountain streams are still high but they are now fishable, and most lakes are accessible. There is still snow in shady spots and on high passes, but it is melting quickly. Late July and August are the best times to backpack or horsepack into the High Uintas Wilderness. We have excellent informational articles on fishing the Uintas.

Strawberry continues to be quite slow, but everyone expects success to pick up soon. Trout will be moving deeper now that the weather is hot, and will be caught by anglers using special tackle to troll deep, or to bait fish in deeper water. Fly fishers will still catch a few fish in the early morning and late evening hours, particularly near inlets.

Most other Utah trout waters are fishing well. See DWR's weekly fishing report for ideas.

Lake Powell now has consistent striper boils from Bullfrog up to Good Hope. Wayne Gustaveson reports, “The next step in boil progression will be at Hite. The water is now clearing rapidly as runoff has subsided to normal summer flow patterns... Expect boils to be bigger and stronger each day in the Hite area. That will be the place to be from mid July to the end of the month.” Read his complete report.

We have several articles with how-to-information on fishing the boils. It is one of the most enjoyable fishing events in Utah.
