What's New

Strawberry's Next
I was scheduled to fish Strawberry last weekend but never made it – too much work to do. I guess that is a good problem to have.

So I will get up there this weekend – work can wait.

Next week I have to drive to Iowa to see my inlaws. Anyone know of any good fishing waters in the middle of that state? I guess I could try for catfish in the Racoons River.

Powell in October
There are mighty good reports coming from Lake Powell. I hope to get down there in early October. I'm hoping this warm weather holds. Either way, fishing should continue to be good. Early October is a great time to fish the lake.

Many Utah schools are out for UEA Oct 14-15. Powell is busy that weekend, as people get in one last trip. I try to avoid that weekend.

Fall Colors
I drove through Logan Canyon Tuesday and Provo Canyon today, and enjoyed seeing the leaves. Looks like peak colors will happen during the last week of September in northern Utah. Get out and enjoy.

Fishing Overview

Fly fishing is still good using terrestrial patterns. There is also some action on caddis, pmds and standard nymphs. That will continue to be the case until the weather turns cold. After that, we'll get some blue wings. Streamers will also become more productive as we move into colder weather.

Lake Powell striper, bass and walleye fishing is very good. With these warm temperatures, good fishing may linger longer this year. Action should be very good until mid-October, and perhaps later. After that success for most species will start to taper off.

Strawberry and most other reservoirs offer good trout fishing, and success is getting better every week as we move into fall. Strawberry is usually very good for big fish during late September and early October.

Utah's Wildlife Board will consider hunting and fishing proclamation changes in meetings on Sept 22 and 23. Agenda.

Elk hunting permits are almost sold out. Act now if you want one. Details.

Chukars and grouse hunts are coming up and DWR says there are more birds this year. Details.

Gold prospecting is becoming more popular with the down economy and high price for metals. Details.
