My photo shows a flippy little kokanee from Moon Lake. The critters would not hold still. I thought it produced an interesting effect. See more photos from the trip.

What's New
Fall Is Coming Fast
I drove through Pinedale, Wyoming, yesterday and took a little time to explore some of the beautiful lakes in the area. I didn't have time to fish, but I'll definitely fish there next year. I listened to the local radio station and heard a weather report: low temperatures around 29 and a good chance of snow Sunday evening. Short summer up there.
Moon Lake Kokanee
I enjoyed fishing and camping at Moon Lake last weekend. We caught small kokanee almost as fast as we could pull them in. Also caught small rainbows. The biggest fish we caught was about 8 inches long. Great fun for the kids.
We just trolled small lures behind a rubber boat pushed by an electric motor. My fish finder showed most of the fish were near the surface. Did see a few clusters of fish deep but they were also small. Dropped lures down to them but none would bite. All of our action came near the surface.
The kokanee would hit any small lure. I even caught one on a Rapala.
The restrooms at camp were amazingly clean. And the place has flush toilets! It is a very nice campground.
See my photos from the trip.
Labor Day At Flaming Gorge
I'll be fishing Flaming Gorge this weekend. It is the big holiday weekend, and so I usually try to hide somewhere, but the Gorge is big enough I should be able to get away from the crowds.
We will target kokanee in particular but also fish for other species, including the abundant smallmouth bass.
Another week, another campout. I've camped out at least one night every week for the past 6 weeks. It has been a fun summer.
DWR is sponsoring kokanee watch events on Sept 18, at the Strawberry Visitor Center and Sheep Creek on Flaming Gorge.

Fishing Overview
Lake Powell striped bass fishing is excellent right now. Smallmouth fishing is good and will get better during the next few weeks as the water starts to cool. Great fishing will probably hold up through mid or late October. This is one of the best times of year to fish and play at Lake Powell. Read Wayne Gustaveson's weekly report for fishing tips.
Fly fishing continues to be good on our streams. Productive patterns include hoppers, ants, other terrestrials, caddis and pale morning duns. Terrestrials should continue to fish well through the month on most waters. The leaves will soon be turning in the high country, making this a very enjoyable time to get out.
Flaming Gorge kokanee fishing is good right now – as mature fish start to congregate before spawning. Remember, special regulations take effect soon on most kokanee waters. At the Gorge, all kokanee salmon caught from Sept. 10 through Nov. 30 must be immediately released.
Strawberry Reservoir attracts considerable fishing attention during the fall. As the water cools, fish feed more aggressively as if they know lean winter days are just ahead. Many anglers cast or troll minnow imitating lures and enjoy great action. The Pointer Minnow has become the lure of choice for many Strawberry fishermen, but Rapalas and other similar lures work great. Action at Strawberry should start to pick up now and become better and better until ice and snow shut down access.
Other trout reservoirs follow a similar pattern. Fall trout fishing should be very good at Flaming Gorge, Fish Lake and Scofield. Most other reservoirs will offer good trout fishing.
Smallmouth bass fishing is good at at northern waters including Jordanelle, Deer Creek, Starvation and Flaming Gorge. That action will fade within a few weeks at the water cools. At Lake Powell, Sand Hollow and Quail Lake, good bass fishing will extend into November.
