What's New

Strawberry Report
I fished Strawberry on Tuesday and had a great time. Fishing was good and we caught several decent-sized fish. It was about 8 am when we launched the boat. My plan was to work the Mud Creek shoreline early and then troll or jig later in the day. Kevin caught a nice cutt on his first cast and we took that as a good omen. But that was the only fish we caught near shore.

We cruised over to the bay out from the mouth of the Strawberry River, intending to work the shoreline there. A boat was already fishing our target spot so we trolled wide, out into the bay, to get around it. Surprise, we started catching fish over deep water away from the shore. We enjoyed that action, trolling up the bay until we hit shallow water.

We then moved over to Chicken Creek and caught a couple there but that action was slower and so we returned to the Strawberry River Bay. (Anyone know the name of that bay? I'd like to mark it on my Strawberry Reservoir map.)

A stiff breeze came up about Noon but that did not slow the fishing. Action started to slow about 2 pm and we left about 3 pm. All fish caught were cutts. Most ran 12-18 inches but we also caught 1 that was about 19 inches, another about 20 and one we estimated to be 22 inches. We did not measure any of them, just returned them to the water.

Our best lure was a small, original Rapala in rainbow colors. We just long-lined it, trolling it just under the surface. We tried many other lures, shallow and deep. We tried downriggers and pop gear, but that little Rapala was the hot lure. I was very surprised that most of our fish were caught on the Rapala, trolled just under the surface over deep water.

How many fish? We landed 12 and lost several more right at the boat. (I don't use a net on small fish that I intend to release. I try to release them without touching them by reaching down, grabbing the lure and popping the hook free. I often do not even raising the fish completely out of the water. Many fish flip and free themselves as I grab for the hook.)

Anyway, it was a very good day. See my report and photos.

Lake Powell and The Maze
I had a good trip planned for this weekend but my wife is not feeling well and so I need to stick close to home. I'll probably fish one of the local streams.

My next major trip will be down to Powell. I look forward to trolling and jigging for stripers and enjoying the sunshine before the weather turns cold.

I'll probably camp at Hite. If things go well, I'll take a day and Jeep into The Maze district of Canyonlands National Park. The famous “Harvest Scene” ancient rock art panel is located in a remote canyon there. I hope to get a photo.

Right now I'm flexible on dates and have room in the boat. Let me know if you want to come along.

Fishing Overview

Fall colors are peaking right now in northern Utah. Go fish and enjoy the colors in the canyons and on the mountainsides.

Fishing conditions have not changed much over the past couple weeks, and will probably not change until we get an extended cold spell. These summer-like days are very beautiful but it is definitely fall at higher elevations. I fished Strawberry this week and it was downright cold early in the morning, but hot during the afternoon. Fishing was very good. See my report and photos.

Strawberry, Flaming Gorge, Fish Lake, Scofield and many other trout waters offer good fishing now and they will be great as the weather cools.

Green, Provo, Weber, Logan, Blacksmith, Hobble Creek, Huntington Creek and many other streams offer great fly fishing. Hoppers and other terrestrials continue to provide good surface action.

Lake Powell has summer-like conditions. Fishing is very good and the water is plenty warm for skiing, tubing and other water sports. Bass and striped bass fishing will improve as we get cooler temperatures.
