What's New

Trail Closures
- The Angels Landing trail in Zion Park will be closed at times this fall while crews make improvements. Details.
- The Mineral Bottom Road in Canyonlands National Park has been washed out by flooding. It is part of the White Rim Trail and provides access to the Green River. It will be closed indefinitely. Details.

Strawberry Anglers Association
I'm a member of the association and help with their website. We've started putting audio transcripts of meetings on the web. At our last meeting, Brent Halstrom talked about winterizing boats. Listen to the transcript.

SAA is a great group. We invite you to attend meetings and consider joining.

Flaming Gorge
We had fun at The Gorge last weekend. My primary goal was to find the kokanee and that took some time. I hoped to find them in Sheep Creek Bay, but did not find concentrations there yet. We started catching them when we fished the downlake end of Hideout, using downriggers to troll small lures at 50 feet.

We caught tons of rainbows and had good smallmouth bass action. See our fishing report and photos.

The Gorge will provide good to very good fishing for the next several weeks.

Strawberry Is Next
I'll be fishing Strawberry this weekend. Action there is starting to pick up and will get better and better as the weather cools. I hope to fish there 2-3 times before it gets too cold.

Lake Powell is back on my schedule. I plan to get down there later this month or in early October, while the fishing is good, for one more warm-weather trip.

Fishing Overview

Leaves have started to turn at higher elevations in northern Utah. Daytime temperatures will be up and down during the next few days, with some very beautiful days ahead. Fish are feeding aggressively and action is improving on most waters. Now's a great time to enjoy the outdoors.

Bear problems have been frequent this year and will become even more common as the season progresses. Dozens of news articles warn people to use caution. (See headlines below.) Here's just one: Hungry Bears Plaguing Towns From Coast to Coast.

KSL has an interesting article (Utah's trophy fisheries in trouble) which says fishermen are keeping too many trout on the Green and Provo rivers. Managers are having a hard time convincing people to harvest a few fish, for the good of those fisheries.

Fly fishing is good on those and other streams. Hoppers, other terrestrials, caddis and nymphs are providing consistent action.

Strawberry Reservoir action has picked up, and success will steadily get better. During late September and early October, anglers have great success fishing larger lures like Rapalas and Pointer Minnows. Success will be great from boats, but also very good from shore.

Flaming Gorge, Fish Lake, Otter Creek, Scofield and many other reservoirs offer good trout fishing.

Lake Powell striper and smallmouth fishing continues to be very good and is expected to get better during the next few weeks. It is still summer at Powell - the air and water are still warm but both are now slowly starting to cool. Great fishing will hold up into late October or early November.
