  • Spring-Like Conditions On Our Streams
    Written by Dave Webb
Spring-Like Conditions On Our Streams I heave a rule: when the weather is nice then go fishing. Today it was and so I did.   It was a delightful day and I had great fun fishing, event thought action was a bit slow. The air temperature was warm, the sunshine felt very nice and it was very nice to get out.   I choose to fish Diamond Fork, which is just minutes from my home. The level was low and the water was crystal clear. Before starting to fish I walked to the middle of a bridge to survey the water. As I paused, I…

    Written by Dave Webb
Stripers are now active on the upper end of Lake Powell. www.wayneswords.com offers the best fishing info for the lake. Wayne Gustaveson is the Utah DWR project leader for the lake and he updates fishing conditions weekly from March through October. His site also has a buletin board where readers post good information. Here's the latest post: "Just came home from one of the best trips ever. Located a few small schools on the high spots in striper city from 35-40 ft. Also caught a dozen walleye while jigging a kastmaster. Then I found a really large school in 55…

  • Bear Lake has hot open-water fishing
    Written by Dave Webb
Bear Lake Project Leader Scott Tolentino provided this report: The fishing is red hot! Cutthroat trout and lake trout fishing has been phenomenal the past week. This past weekend anglers reported excellent fishing for cutthroat and lakers by either trolling or jigging. If trolling, good depths to target have been about 70-90 feet using large minnow type lure or flatfish. When jigging try castmasters or other vertical jigging spoons or use lead head jigs tipped with cisco. Good spots to try are off Gus Rich Point, the rockpile, and Cisco Beach.  Bear Lake still has quite a bit of floating ice,…

See Lots Of Deer, Snow Geese There will be exciting opportunities to see and photograph wildlife in Utah during the next few weeks. Our Division of Wildlife Resources reports that large herds of mule deer can be seen from roadways in some areas. The DWR has published this article giving viewing tips. Beautiful, white snow geese migrate through Utah during late winter and thousands of the birds stop in marshes and fields near the Delta. Watching the birds has become a popular activity - the community hosts and annual "Snow Goose Festival" to educate people about the birds, provide coordinated viewing opportunities and other activities. DWR…

His tips include: Using sonar to get bait to the exact depth of the fish Using the smallest bait possible Use sent to mask human odors Fishing during hours recommended using solunar predictions I've never put much stock in solunar predictions. How about you? I'd love to get your comments about solunar tables - do they make much difference?

  • Free Trips

Free Trips Feb 23-25 - Join me for a fun trip fishing open water and then an adventure hike. I plan to fish Recapture Reservoir near the small town of Blanding, trying to catch a northern pike. I will also hike to photogenic, remote Anasazi ruins and rock art on the San Juan River south of the town of Bluff. I'll probably camp at Racapture. If the weather is bad I'll postpone for a week or two. There are motels nearby, if you are not into camping. Dates are still somewhat flexible. If you are interested in joining me, use my contact…
