See Lots Of Deer, Snow Geese

Written by Dave Webb

There will be exciting opportunities to see and photograph wildlife in Utah during the next few weeks. Our Division of Wildlife Resources reports that large herds of mule deer can be seen from roadways in some areas. The DWR has published this article giving viewing tips.

Beautiful, white snow geese migrate through Utah during late winter and thousands of the birds stop in marshes and fields near the Delta. Watching the birds has become a popular activity - the community hosts and annual "Snow Goose Festival" to educate people about the birds, provide coordinated viewing opportunities and other activities. DWR biologists participate and offer educational activities and help with viewing. See this article for more information.

Utah's DWR has scheduled public meetings to get input from the public on ways to improve deer hunting. See the DWR blog for specifics on the discussion.

Provo Harald: June sucker vs. Provo River

Written by Dave Webb

The Provo Harald has this editorial about plans to dewater 1.5 miles of the Provo River just above Utah Lake. Here's a quote from the editorial:

If it takes closing a river and negatively affecting a large number of people to possibly -- possibly -- save the sucker, then it may be time to let the fish sink or swim on its own. Either that or hurry up and probe its body for the elixir of immortality.

When it goes over the top, however, people rightfully object. Jamming live June suckers down the throats of residents along the Provo River is wrong.

Written by Administrator

The second annual Flaming Gorge Burbot Bash runs January 25–28, 2012. The event is endorsed by Utah and Wyoming state wildlife agencies, Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, area community leaders and chambers of commerce.

If you would like to learn to catch burbot at The Gorge, you will find excellent information during bash. Burbot were illegally introduced into the water and are damaging the fishery. Wildlife biologists hope people will catch and remove all of burbot possible.

See this DWR article for information.
