Sanpete County has become a popular area for recreational property because it is scenic and offers excellent recreational opportunities. Quaint little communities in this area, like Fairview, Mountain Pleasant and Spring City, attract some people while others look for cabin property in the adjacent canyons and on the mountaintops. The high mountains to the east of these towns constitute the Wasatch Plateau. A rugged, mostly dirt road called Skyline Drive stretches through the tops of these mountains, from Hwy 6 on the north to I-70 on the south. Skyline Drive provides access to numerous small lakes and streams. Fishing is excellent in many of these waters. Hunting is also very popular here - these mountains shelter large herds of mule deer and elk, and this is one of the most important hunting spots in the state. Scofield Reservoir, one of Utah's most popular trout fisheries, is located on the northeast edge of this area. The reservoir is about 105 miles from Salt Lake City (60 miles from Provo) via Hwy 6. Other popular fishing waters include Electric Lake, Huntington Creek, Huntington Reservoir and Fish Creek. The Skyline Drive and adjacent trails provide excellent ATV routes during summer and this is one of Utah's premier snowmobile areas in winter.
