I'm just back from a fun short trip to Lake Powell. We launched on the sand at Lone Rock and had fun pulling kids on tubes and exploring the lake. The water level is low, but there is still plenty to enjoy. (3,553.55 feet above sea level, 146.45 feet below its full pool.)
I like to camp at Lone Rock because we can drive right to the water and camp on the beach. Access is through deep sand, so a high-clearance 4x4 is required. There were surprisingly few people at Lone Rock, so it was easy to find a nice camping spot. Strong winds blew sand around through much of the day. Mornings were calm, cool, and delightful.
We did boat uplake, sightseeing and exploring. The Castle Rock Cut is dry and so we had to go through the main channel. It was busy, like always, with choppy water. In my opinion, Wahweap Bay is okay, the main channel is miserable and uplake side canyons are paradise. I love to haul people and gear away from the marinas and camp in a secluded side canyon, when the group is small enough to fit into the boat.
We did not fish. I hear some people are finding boiling stripped bass but we did not even try. That action can be very fast and you are most likely to encounter boils early and late in the day.
We did get stuck pulling the boat trailer through the deep sand, trying to get up to the pavement from Lone Rock Beach. Nice people camping nearby hooked their truck to my Toyota FJ, and together we made it up the hill.
It was a fun trip.
