What's New
I'll be a guest in-studio on KSL Outdoors Saturday morning, 6-8 am. I'll report on my recent fishing/hiking trip to Grand Canyon, and on winter fishing and hiking opportunities. Tune in: 102.7 FM and 1160 AM.

Photos from my recent trips:
- Toroweap Viewpoint at Grand Canyon
- Colorado River in Grand Canyon, fishing for rainbows
- Interesting Arch in Red Cliffs Reserve

Toroweap is a remote vista on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The view is dramatic because it drops almost straight down 2,800 feet to the Colorado River. See my blog about that trip.

We hard great fun fishing for rainbows in the Colorado River in the top of the Grand Canyon. The bows we caught were small but it felt great to wade into the clear water and fish in the sunshine. See my post on that trip.

While exploring the land of sand and sandstone, we found a beautiful little arch in a little-know area. I also blogged about that hike.

Fishing Overview
Ice fishing continues to be good at our major trout and perch waters. Fish Lake is the hotspot - it offers very good action for nice fish. Strawberry is finicky; it can be very good if you are in the right place at the right time.

Our popular waters have been fished hard, especially in areas where access is easy. To get into good fishing you need to move away from the crowds.

Many waters now have areas with slush; some have thin ice around the edges. Reservoirs are filling and so the solid ice floats away from shore. New ice forming around the edges may not be thick. Both those problems will intensify as we move into February. Wear waterproof boots and use caution taking snowmobiles or ATVs onto the ice.

Lake Powell winter striper fishing was spotlighted in an excellent report on Roughin' It Outdoors. They caught an amazing number of nice striped bass. Watch the video.

Big stripers are being caught in Lake Mead, even during the dead of winter. Details.
