What's New
It was cold today, and another storm is expected for Sunday/Monday. But we will yet have many nice, mild fall days. Watch the weather and go fishing when conditions are nice.

Tomorrow (Friday) looks great and so I hope to get up to Scofield. Quick trip to get my fishing fix and enjoy a nice day.

Lake Powell is still very attractive - it is still warm enough to play in the water. But that will change within a couple weeks. I hope to fish Powell next weekend. I'll also try to do a little hiking down there - perhaps one more slot canyon water hike before the weather is too cold for that activity.

Fishing Wiki
Our fishing wiki is coming together nicely. I've just added a feature so readers can easily post new articles, and the articles are instantly available via a link in the articles list.

Now I'm working to enable the creation of groups, with some social networking capacities. In particular, our groups will help people find and communicate with others who are interested in fishing at certain waters. They will also be able to post photos, and video.

Events
Special Regional Advisory Council meetings have been scheduled to seek public input on bison management in Utah. The number of bison on the Henry Mountains needs to be reduced. Should the state move more bison from the Henry Mountains to the Book Cliffs? Or should the state offer more hunting permits? Come to one of the meetings and share your viewpoint. Details.

- Good Fishing, Dave Webb

Fishing Overview
Lake trout fishing continues to be good at Flaming Gorge, Bear Lake and Fish Lake. Action is never fast but nice sized fish are being caught on a consistent basis. There are special regs for lake trout so be sure to read up before heading out. Good lake trout fishing will continue into November.

Fly fishing remains good on our streams. Now that we've had some cold weather, dry fly action will taper off. Hoppers and other terrestrials will continue to be productive for a couple more weeks. Streamers will become more important as brown trout become more aggressive before spawning. Nymphs continue to work on the bottom.

High lakes are good if you can get in. The Uintas picked up some snow yesterday and will get more this weekend. The backcountry will shut down quickly now but there is still opportunity to fish the more accessible waters.

Boulder Mountain will stay open a bit longer than the Uintas because these storms are not expected to do much that far south. The big brook trout there are beautiful during fall.

Lake Powell striper fishing is still very good with some fish caught from boils and others caught spooning in deeper water. But now bass fishing may be even better. Wayne Gustaveson says, "Bass fishing with topwater lures around brush and shad in shallow water at the back of the canyon provides non stop morning and evening success. A surface popper worked slowly with frequent pauses is irresistible to 10-14 inch large and smallmouth bass." Good fishing will continue at Powell at least through October. Read Wayne's full report.

Bass fishing will slow now in northern Utah waters. Bass fishing will continue to be very good through the month at Sand Hollow and Lake Powell.

New Fishing Regulations
Several significant regulation changes will become effective in 2010, after being approved by the Utah Wildlife Board. Read DWR's article on the regulation changes.

Under the new rules, there will be a 2-fish limit at community fishing waters and the yellow perch limit will be standardized at 50 fish across the state. In addition, regulations were changed at Kolob Reservoir to allow bait fishing during the summer. Fishing will be restricted to artificials only during from mid-September through late May.
