What's New

Me, I'm going big game hunting - angling for lake trout at Fish Lake. Should be a delightful weekend.

I had a blast last weekend in the Hite area on Lake Powell. I caught the striper shown above. Here's a summary of our activities:
- Rappelled and swam through a tight slot in Fry Canyon. Photos.
- Tried hard to hike the infamous Black Hole of White Canyon, but had to turn back. First time in many years I've entered a canyon I couldn't finish. Blog. Photos.
- Tried fishing Powell but terrible wind blew us off the water. Photos.

Fishing Overview
The general season rifle deer hunt starts this weekend. Many sportsmen are focusing on hunting and so there have not been many fishing reports. That's fine - those of us hitting the water will enjoy great fishing with little competition.

Some hunters take along their fishing rods. That's a great strategy. Get cold and tired up on the mountain during the early morning, then come down and catch some fish so you have something to show for the trip.

Stream fishing will be good during the next few weeks, with warm weather extending the dry fly season. PMDs and BWOs will probably hatch on most streams on warm afternoons. Streamer patterns will be productive early and late. Standard nymphs also work well. This is typically a great time to go after large brown trout.

Our trout reservoirs are also fishing well. Algae and weeds will be dying back soon and that will make it easier to fish. Trout are ranging freely and fishing is productive from boat and shore, using a wide variety of lures and baits.

Lake Powell continues to offer decent fishing when the weather is warm and stable. Wayne Gustaveson reports: "Fishing success is actually less in numbers than normally seen this time of year, particularly for striped bass. However the quality of fish caught is so good that satisfaction levels are very high. Crappie and bluegill fishing is beginning to get very good. Crappie fishing will improve as water temperature drops. Look for the best crappie fishing of the year during the next four weeks. They will be deep in the trees but can be caught on small grubs and jigs fished straight down into the thickest cover of the largest submerged tamarisk thickets."

Sand Hollow also offers good bass fishing. Bass and catfish action at northern Utah waters will slow now.
