Fishing Overview

This weekend will be perfect, the definition of Indian Summer. Hunt, fish, camp, hike - conditions are ideal for almost everything.

Virtually all of our waters are fishing well: Strawberry, Provo River, Lake Powell...

Green River success slowed last week because they started letting cold (42F) water out of the dam. That ended dry fly hatches and has fish hunkered down. Conditions may improve this weekend, with warmer air temperatures. The fish are still there, and they should be getting hungry. Nymphs and streamers will be the ticket.

Brown trout are getting more aggressive on other streams, as they fatten up for winter and start thinking about spawning. Late October and early November are excellent times to target big browns. Streamer flies and Rapala-like lures get them.

Flaming Gorge is a great choice. Big lake trout are being caught around spawning areas, and rainbows are also cooperating with fishermen.

Lake Powell will offer very good fall fishing during the next couple weeks and then action will start to fade. Wayne Gustaveson reports, "October is hunting season and fish-hunting is good right now." He expects major striper boils in the mid-lake during mid-day. Read his full report.

What's New

Featured Video

Houseboating Lake Powell. We're moving into the shoulder season and so there are deals available. Houseboating is great during the fall - the fishing is great and crowds are down. Houseboats are nice now that nighttime temperatures are getting crisp. Some top of the line boats even have fireplaces and hot tubs.

Where To Fish

I am heading to Lake Powell to enjoy this blessed sunshine. I'm finally going to explore the Lake's San Juan arm. By the end of this trip I'll have poked into every canyon on the huge lake. Oh, I'll do a little fishing while I'm down there.

Fishing at Powell will stay good for another month or so, but it will become less pleasant as the temperatures all. There is still time for a late-season trip.
