Fishing Overview
Rain is expected over most of Utah this weekend, with considerable snow falling in the high country. Take care if you get out.
Where do you fish on a stormy weekend in early October? You can't go wrong on our trout streams. All of them should fish well, even during light rain. You'll probably want to knock off if it comes down heavy. Streamers and nymphs should work well during the storm. And the fish, well, they don't mind getting wet.
Stormy weather slows success for smallmouth and stripers. As the storm clears, fishing will be very good on the lower half of Lake Powell. The upper lake will still have slow action because game fish are fat and lazy, living the high life amid an abundance of shad.
Lake Powell has hot fishing on the southern end but the north is slow. Shad are so abundant uplake that game fish are fat and lazy. Wayne Gustaveson reports: "The southern lake is coming alive! Stripers are boiling stronger with each passing day. Boils are still random. There may only be one boil encountered each day due to chance and circumstances, but the experience will be memorable. These stripers are getting big and strong. It has been a 3 or 4 years since fat 4-pounders were consistently caught. But that time is now and it will continue over this winter and into next spring. Good times are back!" Read his full report.
Flaming Gorge lake trout are been biting well. This is the best time of year to target big fish because they are somewhat predictable as they stage before spawning. Action is never fast when you play with the big boys, you've got to invest time and effort if you want a trophy. This article has details.

What's New
A huge elk was recently bagged in Utah and it may prove to be a new world record. "Initial measurements, according to Moss, are 500 4/8 inches gross and 488 net green. The official Boone & Crockett measurement will come after the drying period, but it is expected that it will eclipse the current world record." It was taken on Monroe Mountain by Denny Austad, owner of the 2008 Utah statewide conservation elk tag. Details.
General season elk, waterfowl and some other hunts begin this weekend.
We've just completed a massive project creating video clips for utah.com. We've embedded some into pages (here's an example). All the clips can be seen in that site's new video player.
We've also completed some new clips for this site: - Strawberry Reservoir Overview
I fished Electric Lake last weekend. Action was decent - not hot but plenty of fish to keep us interested. Nothing very big - our largest a cutthrout that went about 16 inch.
Fall colors were gorgeous. We caught them at their peak for that elevation. I shot these photos.
With rain coming, I think I'll fish one of our trout streams this weekend. Perhaps the Ogden River. It usually offers good brown trout fishing. I need to go up there to take some photos for utah.com, so it will be convenient.
