Thursday Oct 9 Fishing Overview
Another storm is coming - isn't it nice how they schedule these things every weekend. Snow may fall in northern Utah valleys, and mountains will get plastered. Use caution.
How do you cope when it is beautiful during the week and stormy every weekend? Well, go fishing mid-week. Sneak away from work an hour or two early and hit a local water - the Ogden, Weber, Provo, Jordanelle, Strawberry - there are plenty of good choices.
There will yet be many sunny, mild days to fish and hike and camp. The next few weeks will be ideal for exploring our red rock deserts.
Lake Powell fishing is great for bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish. Striper action is spotty but fish are big. See this report for current information.
Fly fishing is good to great on our trout streams. Steve Schmidt reports, "The upcoming (stormy) weather pattern will be good for the Blue Wing Olives that are now on the water with regularity. Fishing remains very good as we motor into October. PMD"s, Caddisflies and BWO's are the hatches you'll encounter. At this juncture in the year, make sure and have some streamers in your box, especially on these stormy days ahead. Streamside vegetation and hillsides are also vibrant in color, so pull your head out of the water for a minute or two and take a look around." Read Steve's full report.
Utah's Wildlife Board has approved significant changes to fishing regulations, which will become effective Jan 1. Read details. Interesting Post By Anglers

What's New
Lake Powell from the air - Some time ago we flew around Lake Powell in a small plane, shooting video out the window. That's fun. Well, we finally got around to editing and posting the video. See it here.
Where to fish? A cold, winter-like storm will hit Friday and stay through Sunday and I'm reluctant to take my boat out. Snow could fall in the valleys and a foot or more is expected at elevations above 7,500 feet.
If conditions don't look too bad I'd like to fish the Price River. It has a good population of brown trout and usually fishes very well in the fall. I'll probably throw streamers with my fly rod.
After the storm clears I hope to put the boat out on Scofield. It has been very good lately for rainbows, cutthroat and tiger trout. I think I'll try a large tube jig tipped with bait. I'll start out casting as I work along the shoreline around the Island. If I see a concentration of fish on my graph I'll stop and jig vertically. I'll also troll a bit - at least too and from the Island.
