What's New
Bill Mounga sent in the photo above. He has caught many big fish at Strawberry this fall, mostly on Lucky Craft Pointer Minnows. See more of his photos.

I fished Strawberry last Friday and had a good trip. We caught several nice fish, but had to work hard for each one. We trolled and cast jigs and Rapalas. We caught fish on a variety of lures, never two fish on the same lure. Here is a short video showing our trip.

Last week I hiked to a great Anasazi ruin complex down on Cedar Mesa. I have good photos and video from that outing but haven't had time to get them on the website. I'll post them during the coming week.

After cold and storm this weekend, we'll get back to warm temperatures next week. Temperatures will rise into the mid 60s next week in St George. That's perfect for hiking, biking and other outdoor activities. I'm still hoping to get out to remote Toroweap to do some photography and then follow an easy trail down into the Grand Canyon.

This time of year it is hard make firm plans very far into the future. The secret is to stay flexible and get out whenever good weather comes along.

Events

Bighorn Sheep Festival, Nov 20-21, Moab. This is a chance to view desert bighorn sheep in sunny southeastern Utah. The DWR-sponsored event is free, and people of all ages are invited to attend. Sheep watchers are encouraged to bring binoculars or a spotting scope along with snacks, beverages and a camera. DWR biologists will guide participants to locations where bighorns have been recently observed. The biologists will have extra spotting scopes and binoculars for people to use. They'll also have several large four-wheel drive vehicles for those who don't have the type of vehicle needed to reach the areas where the sheep are.

Fishing Overview
Snow and cold this weekend will make it hard to launch boats at Strawberry, Scofield and other trout waters. Fishing will still be good casting lures from shore. Warmer weather next week will probably melt most of the snow and ice. We're to the point where you should call ahead to determine conditions before pulling a boat up the mountain.

Strawberry has been very good for large trout - I don't remember ever hearing so many good reports. Now's the time to catch big cutthroat and rainbow, and The Berry is the place to do it.

Fly fishing continues to be quite good for this time of year, and conditions aren't bad between storms. BWOs like cool, cloudy days; they hatch in good numbers most afternoons. Under the surface, streamers, glo bugs and standard nymphs work well. The Green, Provo and Weber all offer good brown trout fishing.

Ogden River has good fishing and is often overlooked. October DWR surveys found high brown trout numbers in the canyon below Pineview (an incredible 7,500 browns per mile, about 47% were adult fish). On the South Fork below Causey Reservoir they found about 1,100 browns per mile.

Brown trout may be on redds. Take care not to wade through the nests or bother the spawners in other ways.
