Fishing Overview
striper fishing video
Watch our new video about jigging for Lake Powell stripers during the cold months when the fish are deep.

Weather should be very nice this weekend - get out and fish or hike or ski or something.

This will probably be the last weekend for open-water fishing at Strawberry, Scofield and other high elevation waters. Ramps may be icy but you should be able to launch if you have four-wheel drive. It will be easier to get out in a tube or pontoon. Snow will soon make it very difficult to launch boats. There is already thin ice on some bays at Scofield. Shoreline ice will soon make it difficult to get to open water.

Jordanelle should be accessible for another couple weeks.

Lake Powell fishing has held up longer than expected. Bass and panfish are being taken by anglers casting jigs and lures and stripers are hitting lures trolled down 15-25 feet. Trolling has been very productive around the mouth of White Canyon near Hite area. It now looks like that action may hold through the month.

Quail Lake and Sand Hollow, near St George, are very attractive right now.

Most Utah streams are fishing well. BWO hatches are prolific on cloudy days and offer good top-water action. Streamers and standard nymphs work well when fished deep.

Dennis Breer
Denny Breer, longtime defender of the Green River, passed away recently at his home in Dutch John. He will be greatly missed by the fishing community. He owned Trout Creek Flies shop and Green River Outfitters guide service, and authored a popular book on fishing the Green.

SL Trib columnist Brett Prettyman gave this bit in tribute: "Few people attended more meetings regarding management of the Green River than Breer. He was not afraid to speak his mind when it came to protecting the resource." Read Brett's article and blog.

Steve Schmidt, owner of Western Rivers Flyfisher, gave this tribute: "There's no doubt he'll be greatly missed given all his achievements and efforts on behalf of the Green. If you're headed over there, take the time to stop in at Trout Creek and pay Gracie and their shop a visit and say hello." Read Steve's blog.

Denny wrote many articles for me over the years. Some can be found in the Green River section on my website. I have video of him describing productive fly fishing techniques. I'll get it edited and post it so we can continue to learn from him.

What's New

Your Tax Dollars At Work
Utah's Office of Tourism has launched its winter ad campaign, which includes 5 video spots with people dressed up like snowflakes. You can see the ads here. Past campaigns have been cleaver but this one is embarrassingly lame, in my opinion. But hey, it's only costing us $1.66 million.

Lake Powell Fishing Video
We've posted a new video clip showing how to jig for stripers at Lake Powell during the cold months when the fish are deep. Watch it here.

We've spent some time improving our video section and it is coming along very nicely. We have several good clips in the works and we will be posting new videos every few days.

Fish or Hike
I'll be hiking this weekend, heading for the summit of Notch Peak in Utah's west desert. I'll post a blog, photos and probably a video clip showing the hike.

In a couple weeks I'll be hunting Anasazi ruins down near Blanding. (Actually, utah.com will be sending me down to do some photography at Four Corners, but that is pretty boring.) I have info about some very photogenic ruins and rock art and I will sneak away to find them.

While I'm down south I'll try to take time to fish Recapture Reservoir. Reports suggest there are some nice northern pike in that little-known water. Northerns like cool weather and this may be a great time to catch them.

I love that part of the state. Wish I had time to hike more of its sunny trails.
