What's New
A couple weeks ago I hiked to a fascinating Anasazi ruin called Moon House, located on the edge of Cedar Mesa in southeastern Utah. It is very well preserved - still has many of the original timbers used to construct their mostly-stone buildings. Also has unusual rock art. Fascinating place.

I've posted my photos from the trip. Still working to edit the video I shot. See my blog about the ruin.

Stormy weather is expected this weekend. I'll probably stay near home and bide my time. If there is a window of nice weather I'll sneak out and fly fish a local stream.

Next week's weather looks delightful. Thanksgiving Day temps are expected to be in the low 50s in northern Utah and in the 60s around St George. Perfect for fishing and hiking. Pig out on turkey and then head for the outdoors. Get as far as possible away from anything that resembles a mall.

Except the "mall" in Monument Valley. Maybe I'll do my shopping there. Navajo craftsmen have tumbledown shacks along the highway where they sell turquoise, pottery, rugs, fry bread and many other traditional items.

Where will I play? Can't say yet. I'll watch the weather, find out who can go with me, then choose a trip that matches the group and circumstances. Good choices include St George, Moab and most points in between.

Events
Utah Wildlife Board will meet Dec 2-3 in Salt Lake City to consider Bucks & Bulls Proclamation changes, CWMU approval and conservation permit allocations. Members of the public are invited to attend and participate in meetings.

Bighorn Sheep Festival, Nov 20-21, Moab. This is a chance to view desert bighorn sheep in sunny southeastern Utah. The DWR-sponsored event is free, and people of all ages are invited to attend. Sheep watchers are encouraged to bring binoculars or a spotting scope along with snacks, beverages and a camera. DWR biologists will guide participants to locations where bighorns have been recently observed. The biologists will have extra spotting scopes and binoculars for people to use. They'll also have several large four-wheel drive vehicles for those who don't have the type of vehicle needed to reach the areas where the sheep are.

Fishing Overview
Scofield has a little ice by the dam and a couple crazy people have already ice fished there. See their report. The ice-covered area should grow every day now but it will probably be 2-3 weeks before the entire reservoir is frozen.

Me, I like to play it safe and so I'll give the ice time to firm up. Perhaps by Thanksgiving weekend the ice will be 3-4 inches of ice near the dam and it will be safe to fish that area. Fishing is often very good as the ice forms, as the report referenced above testifies, but I'd rather not bet my life.

Major trout reservoirs still have plenty of open water and offer good fishing from shore and tube. With stormy weather this weekend, I'd be reluctant to launch a big boat. We are expected to warm up again next week and so there may yet be another chance to put your boat on the water.

Fly fishing remains surprisingly good, as we alternate between storms and mild days. BWOs and midges are hatching and provide some dry fly action. Streamers, glo bugs and nymphs work along the bottom.

The Utah Lake carp removal program is progressing. This YouTube video gives an overview of the project.
