What's New
Bill Moung sent in the photo above. Shows a couple of the big fish he caught at Strawberry casting Pointer Minnows from shore. See more of his photos.

I had hoped to be halfway to the bottom of the Grand Canyon right now, but had to postpone my hiking trip because the people who were coming with me are all battling the flu.

Instead, I'll fish Strawberry tomorrow. Got to get up there and enjoy some of the good action everyone is raving about.

Then I'll do an easy weekend hike to some spectacular Anasazi ruins. I had to hunt hard to find companions to do that easy hike. Almost everyone I know is either sick or taking care of family members who are sick.

I'll try to do the Grand Canyon trip Thanksgiving weekend (Fri-Sun). Go to remote Toroweap and take photos and then follow an easy trail down to the river. Hopefully, my group will be better by then. If not I'll go without them, taking whoever will come. Anyone want to join me?

Seriously, I fish and hike more than more friends and family members and so I often need to find people to join me. I'm going to add some community features to my website to help people connect with others who share their interests. I need to expand my friend list, and I'm sure others do also.

I was making good progress on the site until the weather turned nice. Since then I've been too busy playing. I expect there will be plenty of dreary days this winter when I will sit by the fire and expand and improve the site.

Events

Annual Navajo Rug Show & Sale, Nov 6-8, Deer Valley. This year's show will celebrate 20 years of bringing Navajo Elders to Park City to share their culture and sell their rugs. The Elders and their families travel from different parts of the Navajo Reservation and while at the rug show demonstrate skills such as carding wool, spinning yarn, weaving rugs and singing traditional songs for school children and the public.

Bighorn Sheep Festival, Nov 20-21, Moab. This is a chance to view desert bighorn sheep in sunny southeastern Utah. The DWR-sponsored event is free, and people of all ages are invited to attend. Sheep watchers are encouraged to bring binoculars or a spotting scope along with snacks, beverages and a camera. DWR biologists will guide participants to locations where bighorns have been recently observed. The biologists will have extra spotting scopes and binoculars for people to use. They'll also have several large four-wheel drive vehicles for those who don't have the type of vehicle needed to reach the areas where the sheep are.

Fishing Overview
Strawberry is hot! Many are submitting reports of fast fishing for big fish. Most say the best action is coming close to shore. Boat anglers cruise offshore and cast toward the bank. Shore fishermen are also doing well. Pointer Minnows seem to be the most popular and are very productive. Rapalas and various jigs are also good. Some fish are being caught trolling and jigging vertically.

DWR has this great new video showing how to fish Strawberry in the fall.

Most of our trout reservoirs are good right now. Good trout fishing will continue at lakes and reservoirs until snow and cold make fishing uncomfortable and shoreline ice makes it hard to get to open water. Those conditions are bound to come - probably within the next 2-3 weeks. So enjoy now while you can.

Fall fly fishing is peaking right now and will decline during the next few weeks. By the end of November, most anglers hang up their fly rods. Steve Schmidt gives this advice: "The best fishing now will be during the most pleasant part of the day, late morning into the late afternoon. If you are planning on making a day of it, start out with streamers. If streamers are not productive, switch to Blue Wing Olive nymphs, scuds or sow bugs until the hatch begins. Once the hatch begins, get flies in front of those noses." Read Steve's complete report.

DWR biologists have been sampling fish at various locations at Lake Powell. Stripers are plentiful and in good shape, as expected. The surprise in a large number of young walleye. Looks like striper and bass fishing will continue to be good and walleye fishing will improve significantly during the next couple years. Details.
