Fishing Overview
A warm storm is expected this weekend. Next week it will warm up and feel like spring. Forecasters say Salt Lake City will see temperatures near 50 F by mid-week. St George temperatures will warm into the low 60s.

Ice will probably to come off Utah Lake and Willard Bay next week. Fishing will only be fair until the water warms a bit. It will probably be mid-March before many walleye are caught. People working lures and baits slowly in brush will catch some largemouth during March. Some catfish will be caught by people working baits slowly along the bottom.

Good ice fishing will continue at most of our trout waters. Those at lower elevations (Deer Creek, Echo, Rockport) will soon have unsafe ice. Strawberry and other waters at higher elevations will be safe for a few more weeks.

This week's storms made fly fishing difficult and conditions will be sloppy this weekend. Next week fly fishing will start to become good on many streams. Within a few weeks the Provo, Green and other trout streams will have hot fishing.

Lake Powell 2010 fishing forecast has been posted by Wayne Gustaveson (wayneswords.com). He says game fish are abundant and in good shape. Forage fish and cover are also abundant. Traditional methods will work for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Stripers will probably stay in the backs of canyons during the spring and the best action will come trolling and casting.

"Walleye are one of the bonus fish for 2010," Wayne says. "Expect excellent walleye fishing in the Good Hope Bay area. We found an extraordinary number of walleye in our fall fish sampling in 2009. That will translate to great fishing from April 15 to June 15 in the upper lake."
