March 13, 2008 Fishing Overview Open water fishing is now coming on strong. It's time to get out the boats and float tubes. Utah Lake and Willard Bay both have open, fishable water; largemouth bass and walleye are starting to bite. On both waters, action will become good during the next period of warm, stable weather. Our website has excellent articles about walleye fishing on these waters. Utah Lake also has some good action for white bass. Otter Creek and Piute reservoirs have open, fishable water. Rainbow action has been very good at Piute. We haven't heard reports yet from Otter Creek, but it should also be very good during the next few weeks. Rainbows are cruising shorelines and can be caught using flies, lures and jigs. Baits are also effective. Haven't heard any reports about Minersville, but it should also be opening up about now. Action is also improving on many streams. If you want to fish dry flies, check with a local fly shop to identify productive patterns. On the bottom, small nymphs, glo bugs and streamers will work. Rapalas also work well on streams during the spring. Lake Powell water temperature is starting to warm. When it hits the mid-50s, fishing will turn on. That will probably happen next week, according to DWR Lake Powell Project Leader Wayne Gustaveson. By April fishing will be pretty, and by mid-April it will be red hot. Start making your plans... Read Wayne's weekly report. Right now Wayne says largemouth bass are the best target at Powell. "They will be active on warm afternoons in shallow brushy coves. Now is a good time to study the shoreline for brush lines, tumbleweed piles and other brushy shelters that will provide perfect ambush structure when the lake starts to rise." Sand Hollow and Quail Lake, near St George, will be very good for largemouth bass during the next few weeks. Pelican Lake near Vernal has some open water and largemouth bass are starting there. - Utah Lake for white bass - Weber River for trout and whitefish - Strawberry Reservoir for trout - Yuba Reservoir for perch Interesting Post By Anglers
