Fishing Overview
This cold, unsettled, snowy weather will cause walleye, bass and catfish action to slow, but it might just help improve fly fishing for trout.

Blue Wing Olive Mayflies are showing up consistently on our streams now, and that gets the trout going. BWOs like stormy weather. Midges are still coming off during morning hours and BWOs appear during the afternoons. Wind shuts down the hatches but a little rain or snow is not a problem.

When you find trout feeding on the surface, make long, accurate casts to individual fish. You can also do well fishing droppers at this time of year, even when you don't see surface activity. Check with the guys in the fly shops to find out the latest productive patterns and sizes.

Lake Powell largemouth and smallmouth were biting well last week, when the weather was warm. This stormy weather has them hunkering down in the brush. The next period of warm, stable weather will trigger a marked improvement in fishing. Stripers are holding in the backs of canyons and can be caught trolling. Success for all species will become good in early April and very good later in the month. Watch wayneswords.com for updates.

Flaming Gorge is entirely ice-free and offers good fishing for rainbows and lake trout.

Millsite Reservoir has open water and good action for pan-sized trout.

Ice is pulling back at East Canyon, Rockport and Echo reservoirs. All will be totally open soon.
