What's New
Lake Views
Utah Lake Provo Boat Harbor still has some ice, as you can see in the image above. As you can see, there is a ring of open water and then rotten ice. Lindon Marina is completely ice-free. There is still considerable ice out on the main lake.

The image were pulled this morning from this website: http://livelakeview.com They have live web cams at several Utah lakes and reservoirs. It is a good service - you can easily see what conditions are like - whether it is raining, snowing, ice-covered. Could save you a long drive.

Lake Powell
Smallmouth and striper fishing will be red hot by the last week of April, and will continue hot for a few weeks. I hope to fish the big lake during the first week of May. To catch the best action you need to stay flexible and sneak down during a period of stable weather.

Walleye and crappie should also provide great action at Powell at that time.

Help Needed
My fishing wiki is coming together nicely. I've worked through bugs and it is ready. Now I need people to help me post good info about major fishing waters. To get it going, I want to buy articles about major waters.

I'll pay $100 for a package that includes a good article and a good photo or two. Not enough to make you rich but it can pay some of your fishing trip expenses. Email me before you start writing because I want to coordinate the effort. My Strawberry wiki page is a good example of how I want info structured.

Pass this along to others you think may be interested.

- Salt Lake International Sportsmen's Expo will be March 18-21 at the South Towne Exposition Center.

- Youth Outdoor Sports Fair will be held in conjunction with the Sportsmen's Expo.

- International Dutch Oven Cook-Off will also be held at the Sportsmen's Expo.

Fishing Overview
Ice is slow to come off low elevation waters like Utah Lake and Willard Bay. There is some open water around shorelines, and some holes out in the middle, but still considerable ice. The warm storm tonight will hasten the melt. If we get a warm breeze, it can push the ice off quickly. Both waters will be open within a few days for sure.

Walleye fishing should be good but spotty at those waters during the last part of March and early April.

Ice Fishing
Action is still good at major waters like Strawberry, Fish Lake and the upper portion of Flaming Gorge.

Ice Fishing Video
DWR and SL Trib have teamed up to put some great videos on YouTube. This one shows ice fishing at Panguitch Lake, with some fun underwater shots.

Fly Fishing
Fishermen report consistent action on midge patterns between storms. Later in the season, stormy weather will be preferred, but right now it is best to fish on warm days when the weather is stable. A few BWOs are showing up but it will be a couple weeks before they become much of a factor.

April will bring great fly fishing on the Green, Provo, Weber and other area streams.

Lake Powell
Wayne Gustaveson has great expectations for the coming fishing season: "Big bass are the first fish to react (to warming temperatures). Some dandies have already been caught with many more to come. Bass fishing tournaments will be held each weekend in March. Expect winning weights to be near 20 pounds for 5 fish. That is a far cry from a decade ago when winning weights were closer to 7 pounds for the same five fish... Expect 2010 largemouth fishing success to be among the best ever seen. March bass fishing success will mark the beginning of a very special year." Read his complete report.

Launching at Powell
Wayne provided this: "Great efforts are being made to prevent invasive species like quagga mussels from being transported to the lake. Some ramps are still closed so that all entering boats can be checked before launching. During March all boats must be launched at Bullfrog or Wahweap Main Ramp between the hours of 6 AM and 5 PM. No night launching will occur as ramps will be closed after dark. All of these precautions are meant to protect this wonderful resource from the devastation that would occur if invasive mussels were inadvertently released. Please help with this effort by giving proper attention to your boat and helping to educate all on the destructive nature of invasive species."
