What's New
Real-Time Fishing Updates Via Twitter
I'm experimenting with the twitter micro-blogging service. I've learned to filter twitter and embed relevant messages in my website pages. If several of us twitter while we are fishing and engaging in other outdoor activities, it could amount to almost real-time updates. I've got some test pages running. My blog gives details.

Where to Fish
If it rains hard this weekend I'll stay home and catch up on stuff. If rain is intermittent I'll probably try the Middle Provo.

I expect Scofield to have some fishable open water by the end of next week. I may head up there mid-week to get a first hand report. Action can be great as the ice pulls back, and I think that may start by Wednesday.

Strawberry may be a week or two out.

Lake Powell is definitely on my list - I'm arranging my schedule and think I'll be down there May 8-10. That should be close to the peak of spring bass fishing.

Great Salt Lake Bird Festival will be May 14-18. Includes workshops, field trips, presentations, food, games, fun for the entire family. Events are held at various locations around the lake and Antelope Island. This year's keynote Speaker is Scott Weidensaul.

Fishing Overview
Streams are high and some are muddy. Water should come down a bit with cooler weather this weekend, unless we get heavy rain. Runoff will increase during the coming weeks. The best stream fishing will be on protected sections below dams.

Fly fishing for trout should be good. Midges and Skwala stoneflies provide action on the surface on sunny, warm days. Blue Wing Olives come on when it is stormy. Nymphs are also good and may be the best bet in high water. On the Weber, Mothers Day Caddis may start to appear during the next warm spell.

At Lake Powell, smallmouth and largemouth are nesting and so they are easy to find and catch. Wayne Gustaveson reports: "Fishing this week will be superb. Good fishing will continue from now until the end of May. Striper and walleye fishing will be better in May. This week bass and crappie are in the forefront." Read his complete report.

Strawberry and Scofield ice could come off during the next warm spell. Fishing is often very good as the ice pulls back. We will post updates as we get them.

Bear Lake biologists report spotty fishing but, "A few anglers have caught exceptionally large fish." The hotspots have been along the east side from Second Point to the state line.

Rockport continues to be good for people trolling for trout about 25 feet deep.

Otter Creek and Piute reservoirs continue to offer good trout fishing from shore and boat.

Pineview crappie should soon start moving into shallow areas where they spawn. Fishing can be very good at that time - usually during early May. Tiger muskie follow the crappie and can be caught off ambush points on the edge of the spawning areas.

DWR is asking anglers to give them ideas about how to improve fishing in Utah.
