What's New

The weather should be wonderful this weekend. Get out and have fun. I'll be camping and hiking in the San Rafael Swell, entertaining family and friends.

Last weekend I was in the Vernal area, exploring and taking photos for utah.com. Got the photo shown above, plus these interesting shots:
- Dinosaur National Monument
- Dinosaur National Monument Rock Art
- Dry Fork Canyon Rock Art
- Utah Field House Museum of Natural History

Utah.com also wants new photos of Flaming Gorge, so I'll guess I'll have to go fish there soon – probably May 21-22. At this point I still have room in the boat. Shoot me a line if you want to come along.

New Friends
In every newsletter I include a May We Suggest list of businesses that offer very good services. Today I'm adding a couple more. These are people I know, and I know they provide a quality experience.
- North Forty Escapes for private pond fishing, horseback riding and ATV tours.
- OK3 Air for scenic flights and flights to adventure destinations.

Safe Boating Week
Utah Safe Boating Week activities will be on May 22, 10 am - 2 pm at Utah Lake State Park. Learn about boat safety and regulations. Compete in safe boating challenges. Free vessel safety checks by US Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Fishing Overview
Strawberry Reservoir fishing is picking up as the ice comes off. As of this morning, the Soldier Creek and Aspen Grove areas were about 90% ice free. The main lake still has considerable ice, but it will be gone in a few days. This will be a big weekend for ice-off fishing. Many people like o fish right on the edge of the ice you will need a tube or boat to reach it. Floating ice may become a problem if it gets windy, so use caution.

Scofield has been hot for tiger trout and it is totally ice-free. Scofield is always one of our best reservoirs for shore fishing and it is particularly good during spring. Nice tigers and cutts are being caught, along with smaller rainbows.

DWR reports very good fishing at Forsyth and Mill Meadow reservoirs in southern Utah, for tiger trout and wild browns. Details.

Most of our trout reservoirs now offer good fishing.

Lake Powell fishing is still very good for all species except striped bass. The stripers are in pre-spawn mode and are not eating much. But that will change in a couple weeks. Powell will soon settle into a summer pattern, where fishing will be consistently good but not red hot, and when temperatures will be ideal for water sports. For the latest info, read the fishing report on wayneswords.com.

Sand Hollow and Quail Creek reservoirs offer very good largemouth bass fishing near St George.

Wiper fishing is becoming more consistent at Willard Bay. The Bay also offers big channel cats. Later May is perhaps the best time of the year to go after big catfish at Willard, and at Utah Lake. White bass at Utah Lake will be spawning about now and they will also be very catchable during the next few weeks.

Stream fishing is still good in northern Utah. Runoff has not been a problem and maybe it won't be this year. Streams not protected by dams have moderately high flows but are very fishable.
