What's New

Promote Your Business
If you help us by posting fishing reports or updating info on our wiki, we will promote your website and/or business. Our site gets good traffic and has top search engine rankings for many phrases related to fishing and outdoor recreation. Ads on our site produce good results. We will give you free links and banner ads if you send us good info.

The wiki is coming together nicely. We now have a few fishing reports, see them here. We'll be getting far more reports now that most waters have opened up. We've recently added the capacity to associate YouTube videos with specific waters in the wiki. That's a fun addition – see how it works on our Strawberry page.

Temple Mountain
The photo above shows our camp last weekend at Temple Mountain. We had a group of rookies - some had never been camping. Some of the group explored Goblin Valley. We also did a moderate adventure canyoneering the Crack Canyon slot. Weather was perfect and we had a great time.

Labor Day Weekend
Labor Day is coming up fast (May 31). Where can you go to get away from the crowds and still find good fishing?

Lake Powell marinas will be a zoo. Fishing will be good and the lake can be fun that weekend if you get away from the marinas. Launch early (Thursday if possible), and leave late (Tuesday if possible). Camping in a remote canyon can be great fun.

Strawberry, the Green River and the Provo River will be crowded. I'd stay away from those places, and all Wasatch Front reservoirs.

Flaming Gorge is an excellent choice. There will be good numbers of people at the marinas, but not nearly as many as at Powell. It is easy to boat away from the crowds and fishing will be good all over the reservoir.

Red Fleet, Steinaker and other Uinta Basin waters are good choices. Except Pelican Lake, it will be crowded.

Otter Creek will be packed but Fish Lake, Mill Meadow and Forsyth are good choices.

Many smaller reservoirs away from the Wasatch Front will offer good fishing without the crowds. Try Lower Bowns, Pine Lake, Navajo Lake, Paragonah Reservoir, or similar waters.

Me, I'll fish during the week and hide in the Grand Canyon over the weekend. There is a remote rock art panel down there I need to find.

Whitewater Rafting
With runoff peaking next week, whitewter rafting conditions are prime. Many people like to ride the high water through Cataract, Grand and other classic stretches on the Colorado. The Green, Yampa and Deloris rivers also have great rapids during high water. If your schedule if flexible, you may be able to get in on a rafting trip. Rivers and Rapids

Fishing Overview
Runoff has officially started. Many northern Utah streams are now running high and are expected to peak about May 27. Some stream sections will be muddy on warm days. Overall, streams are fishable right now but that may change as runoff picks up.

Green River flows will increase dramatically during the next several days. Check with the guys in the fly shops before you head out. They are on the streams daily and will share accurate info about conditions.

Cicada will start to show up on Green River during the next several days. The cicada hatch is a big deal - many fly fishermen love to use the big bugs and action can be exciting. Again, check at the fly shops for current conditions.

Strawberry is ice-free and boat ramps are open. Fishing has been fickle – very good for some and tough for others. Most reports of success come from people fishing shallow. But you never know, at this time of year fish can be anywhere.

DWR reports that big cutthroats have been caught recently at The 'Berry, including one that measured 31 inches and another that went 30 inches. Details.

Fish Lake ice is pulling back, but it will be a week or so before it is totally gone. Floating ice is a big hazard at Fish Lake, so much so that boats (including float tubes) are prohibited until the ice is completely gone. Shore fishing is good now and boat fishing will be great when the ice is gone.

Boulder Mountain still has considerable snow and the top probably won't open up until well into June. Posy and some other lakes on the edge of the mountain are now accessible. We have great info on fishing Boulder Mountain.

Willard Bay walleye and wiper action is hit and miss, good if you find the right spots. DWR reports the wipers are in excellent shape: "Many in the sample weighed anywhere from six to eight pounds!"

Utah Lake white bass should now be congregating near spawning grounds. They can produce fast fishing, and they are tasty.

White bass have show up in Deer Creek – because someone illegally dumped them there. DWR is accessing the situation, which could be devastating to the trout fishery. DWR, the Stonefly Society and Utah Trout Unlimited are offering a reward of up to $7,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who put the bass in the reservoir. Details.
