What's New

Mother's Day
Provo Herald has this article suggesting you take Mom fishing for Mother's Day. Not a bad idea.

Strawberry
The 'Berry is slow to open up this year. I didn't believe it so I went up and checked for myself. At The Ladders, Chicken Creek West and Mud Creek there is a tiny bit of open water in shallow areas near shore, out 20-30 feet so, but that water is so shallow it is not productive fishing. See my report and photo.

Weber River
When I struck out at Strawberry I went over and fished the Weber just above Echo Reservoir and had good action for brown trout. The photo above shows a 20-incher caught on that trip. See my report and photos.

Shore Fishing
Shore fishing has been very good at Scofield, and pretty good at Rockport and Deer Creek. Shore fishing is a good spring technique because fish often cruise feed shore, looking for aquatic insects in the warmer water in shoreline areas. When you shore fish during summer you want to cast out as far as possible, into the deepest water possible. If you do that during spring you often cast right over the active fish.

When you approach the shoreline you will scare away fish in that immediate location, but fish may still be feeding several yards down the shoreline in either direction. You may want to cast parallel to shore to reach those fish.

If you are in a boat or float tube, you will often do well cruising along the shoreline, staying a casting distance away from the bank. You want to be able to cast into water just a foot or so deep. Begin reeling immediately so you don't snag in the shallow water, but pause now and then so your lure can sink down into deeper water as you work it back toward the boat.

Great Salt Lake Bird Festival
The 12th Annual Great Salt Lake Bird Festival will be May 13-17. Terry Tempest Williams will be the Keynote Speaker. The festival includes workshops, field trips and many other events.

Fishing Overview
Strawberry is still frozen - there is very little fishable open water. The reservoir started to open up last week but cold weekend temperatures caused ice to reform. Since then temps have been cold and not much has melted. It will be a good week before there is significant open water there.

Meanwhile, Scofield has open water and offers good fishing. Action is also good at Rockport, Jordanelle, Deer Creek, East Canyon, Red Fleet, Steinaker, Otter Creek and Piute, as well as many small waters.

DWR has this article with tips on fishing reservoirs in the Uinta Basin.

Lake Powell fishing remains very good for bass and good but spotty for striped bass. Action is also good for other species. When the weather is warm and stable, success can be excellent. Now's a great time to fish the big lake.

Major northern Utah streams are in good shape. Mother's Day caddis will be showing up on some waters now, followed by many other bugs. Talk to the guys in the fly shops for the latest reports.

Runoff in northern Utah will pick up during the next extended warm period. Streams flows are good right now and we may luck out and not have much heavy, muddy runoff. Even stream sections that are not protected by dams may fish well right through the spring. Unless it warms up quickly and stays warm for several days. If that happens, we will have to deal with some mud.

Even though runoff isn't heavy, many streams are running fast. Use caution when wading and supervise kids.

Southern Utah streams are still high and some are muddy.
