Fishing Overview
Green River cicada fishing is great when the weather is nice. The big bugs aren't as active on stormy days and that slows success. Water flows will probably hold at around 4300 cfs into next week. Then flows will drop. Steve Schmidt offers this advice: "Cicadas are a size #10. Since all the guides are fishing these patterns we also tend to fish some other stuff, especially PMX's. Para Crickets and Ants are also good patterns to include in your box." Read his full report.
Provo River flows are high and fishing is difficult. Best to go deep with weighted nymphs or streamers. Surface action will come on strong when flows drop - probably within about two weeks. Drakes should be good at that time.
Lake Powell's Castle Rock Cutoff is open, creating a shortcut between Wahweap and Warm Creek Bay. The lake level has risen to the point that boats can use the cut - for the first time in some 5 years - shaving about 20 miles off round trips uplake from the Wahweap ramps.
Powell's other big news is that striped bass have begun feeding on the surface. Wayne Gustaveson reports: "Two-pound stripers have found the newly spawned larval threadfin and gizzard shad. Tiny shad have almost no swimming ability making them easy prey. Stripers don't really need to "boil" to eat the little shad. Instead they move easily along the surface and slurp in the big tasty fish plankton. Stripers will be seen lined up on top, shoulder to shoulder, with mouths all oriented in the same direction as they mow through the shad crops." Stripers can now be caught on the surface, and that action will get better and better through the summer. Read Wayne's full report.
Wind has made fishing tough at many reservoirs. Success at Strawberry and other prime waters should increase dramatically about now, if we ever get stable weather.
Electric Lake is providing consistently good trout fishing and the boat ramp there is now usable.
Starvation is now yielding nice walleye.
Catfish action is good at Utah Lake, Willard Bay, Bear River, Lake Powell and other waters.
Many other streams and reservoirs offer good fishing. See DWR's weekly fishing reports for details.

Wildlife Board Meeting: Rules for this fall's upland game hunts are among the items Utah Wildlife Board members are expected to act on when they meet June 19 in Salt Lake City. The meeting begins at 9 am and the public is invited and encouraged to attend. Details
See Colorful Cutthroat Trout, June 14 at a DWR event at Strawberry Reservoir. Colorful cutthroat trout are swimming up the Strawberry River right now. You can see these cutthroats-and watch biologists take eggs from them-at a free wildlife viewing event at the Strawberry Reservoir Visitor Center. It runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. DWR biologists will be available to answer your questions and show you the many cutthroat trout that have worked their way up the Strawberry River to spawn.
See Sunnyside Bighorn Sheep, June 14. Those who live in Sunnyside have an advantage no one else in Utah has-they get to share their town with a herd of wild desert bighorn sheep! You can enjoy what the residents of Sunnyside get to enjoy at a free viewing event. Biologists will be available from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 14 to help you locate the animals and answer your questions. Late afternoon until dusk is usually the best time to see the sheep.
