Whiskey Island Lake in the Uintas

Heading South
I've got to take some people hiking in Zion Park on Monday - we're doing the famous Subway. Got to do it, it's my job.

Since I'll be down that way I plan to fish Newcastle Reservoir Saturday. It has some trout, smallmouth bass and wipers. Bass and wiper fishing should be pretty good. Wipers are very popular at Willard Bay and I'm anxious to see how they are doing in this southern water.

Fourth of July
Where you going to fish for the upcoming holiday? There will be crowds out. My choice would be Moon Lake in the Uintas. Get away from the crowds and up into the cool mountains.

Lake Powell, Flaming Gorge and Strawberry are also good choices. They are big enough to take the crowds.

I'll spend the Fourth taking photos of the celebrations in Delta and Fillmore, for www.millardcountrytravel.com. Again, that's my job.

- Good Fishing, Dave Webb
Fishing Overview
Fly fishing is good now on the Green, Provo and many other streams. Heavy rains can muddy the water but at other times the streams are in good shape.

Green River cicadas are out but not in the numbers expected. But big Mormon crickets are also out and providing some good action.

A wide variety of bugs will be found on the streams during the next few weeks. Your arsenal may include Green Drakes, Caddis, Stoneflies, PMDs and other patterns. Check with the guys in the fly shops to learn the best patterns where you want to fish.

Trout fishing is good at most reservoirs. Right now fish are scattered - they can roam freely because water temps are conducive. But temps will warm considerable during the next few weeks and trout will soon move to cooler spots. That often means deeper or toward inlets. Shore fishing will slow as that happens. Enjoy shore fishing now and then prepare to fish deeper as summer progresses.

Lake Powell striper fishing is improving, with topwater boils becoming more consistent. Striper fishing is good now and will get even better over the next few weeks. Smallmouth, catfish, bluegill and other species are also relatively easy to catch.

Uinta Mountain lakes continue to open up. Lakes accessible by vehicle have been stocked and should offer fair to good fishing. You can now hike to some backcountry lakes but trails are muddy and the high passes are not yet open.
