Newcastle Reservoir Wiper

What's New
I fished Newcastle Reservoir for wipers last weekend. Action was slow - I fished hard but caught only 2 wipers, 5 rainbows and 1 smallmouth. One wiper was small. The other was nice, as you can see from the photo.

July 4th Weekend
I've got to shoot photos and video in Fillmore and Delta, capturing their holiday festivities for their website, millardcountytravel.com. I would rather be out fishing.

Where to fish? I'd head into the Uintas. Fish one of the lakes accessible via automobile, or make a day hike or easy backpack to get away from the crowds.

Fishing Overview
Fly fishing continues to be very good on many streams including the Green and Provo. Cicada have not been much of a factor on the Green - Mormon crickets have been the exciting pattern there. Productive patterns can vary from day to day so check with the fly shops before you head out. The guys in the shops are knowledgeable and always willing to share tips.

Some quality trout streams open for the season on July 11. They are closed during the spring and early summer to protect spawning cutthroat. They include the West Fork of the Duchesne River and Fish Creek and Gooseberry Creek above Scofield.

Strawberry Reservoir fishing has improved and it is now a good choice for trout fishermen. Many other lakes and reservoirs are also fishing well.

Uinta and Boulder Mountain high country is opening up quickly now. All Boulder Mountain lakes are accessible. High passes in the Uintas may still have snow and mud but all trials should be in usable condition within the next couple weeks.

In the high country, fish can be finicky. Action is usually good but can suddenly turn dead cold. If one lake is slow, just try another nearby water. In the Uintas, it may rain every afternoon and it may slow, even in mid-August.

Lake Powell will be busy this weekend, with lots of recreational boaters. Fish will be biting, particularly early and late when there is less boat traffic. If you can, boat away from the popular areas to find the best fishing. Striper boils are common now and should be particularly good on the San Juan arm and also from Hite to Good Hope. See the weekly report by Wayne Gustaveson.

Striper boils will continue to become more consistent and more productive during the next few weeks. Mid-July through August should bring excellent fishing at Powell.
