Hunting Seasons
Archery deer and elk hunts are just around the corner now. See the DWR Wildlife Calendar for hunt dates. DWR has good new info on archery hunts.

What's New
Utah's Best
I'm entertaining friends from Bolivia and want to show them some of the Utah's best adventures. Where should I take them?

This time of year I tell most people to backpack into the Uintas. It's great, and the fishing is good. But they have beautiful mountains in Bolivia and I want to show them country that is totally unique.

I'd love to take them boating/fishing at Lake Powell, but we don't have the time.

We'll probably hike in the red rock. Zion Park is my favorite - we'll hike to a hidden swimming hole under a beautiful waterfall.

We'll go do it this weekend while I can still hike. I was scheduled to do a little kidney donation a couple weeks ago but they had to postpone. Probably do it early next week. So I'll hike now and then sit around in the boat for the rest of the summer.

Fishing Overview
Uinta Mountains and similar high country areas offer very good fishing in lakes and streams. Lakes accessible by road are stocked frequently and are good family fisheries. Hike or backpack a few miles into the backcountry and you can have a great wilderness experience. I enjoy bushwhacking to find lakes not on established trails. Some offer great fishing.

Kokanee fishing has become hot at Flaming Gorge, Strawberry and a few other waters. Most fish are caught trolling small lures; a few are caught vertical jigging. Read our articles about Flaming Gorge kokanee.

Lake Powell fishing is great all around. Wayne Gustaveson reports, "(Striper) boils are random in the south, but steady mid lake, and best from Good Hope to Hite. There were no San Juan reports but it is assumed boils were similar to Hite. Fish are two inches bigger in the south but much more numerous in the north. Bass fishing with dropshot plastic baits is excellent in 20-30 feet of water off rocky points. Catfishing is at a summer peak. Bluegill are hungry for live worms."

Fly fishing is still great on our streams. Steve Schmidt makes this comment: "Typically, August fishing can be off, but with the late start to the season, August will fish more like July. We're in for an excellent late season this year."

Hoppers are now showing and will become more important during the next few weeks. Many kinds of bugs are out and it is important to spend a little time learning what is working on the stream you want to fish. If you are good you can study the water and roll a few rocks to see what comes up. The rest of us do best if we talk to the guys in the fly shops - they are on the streams daily and will recommend good patterns.

Walleye fishing is good at both Willard and Starvation. Willard, Utah Lake and several other waters offer very good action for channel catfish.
