July 31, 2008 Fishing Overview
During August, the heat of summer drives fish deep and action slows in many areas. Our larger streams are an exception. Green River continues to fish well. Both wade and float fishermen are doing well. Terrestrials are hot (ants, beetles and hoppers) but PMDs, small stoneflies, and Caddis patterns are also productive. Talk to the guys in the fly shops for up to the minute advice. On Provo River and other streams, drakes are pretty much done but fishing remains good using PMDs, small stoneflies and Caddis patterns. Hoppers are coming on strong and will provide good action through the fall. Quality waters in the Yellowstone area are fishing well. Steve Schmidt gives the summary below. Read his complete report. - Henry's Fork it is quite good - Madison River has steadied and also is in good shape - Yellowstone Park, some good customers just returned and had exceptional fishing - South Fork of the Snake is still high for this time of year, but the fishing is good Uinta Mountain lakes offer exceptional fishing right now. Take bug repellent because mosquitoes are horrible this year. Boulder Mountain, Skyline Drive and other high areas also offer good action. In Strawberry and other reservoirs, fish deep during the heat of the day. At this time of year people do well trolling pop gear and a worm or fishing bait near the bottom. You can also find success jigging deep and working flies and lures near inlets and near the surface in the early morning and late evening hours. Flaming Gorge kokanee fishing often improves in August, as bigger fish begin to school. You need troll or jig deep to catch them. Lake Powell fishing has become spotty. Hot weather has driven fish deeper and there is plenty of forage, so game fish are harder to find and harder to catch. The upper lake (Hike and the upper San Juan) offer fast fishing but action is pretty slow in other areas. Action will improve in a few weeks, when the shad supply starts to dwindle and air temperatures start to cool. Interesting Post By Anglers
