Zions Subway

What's New
Photos from Newcastle and Zion
I have now posted photos from my recent Newcastle Reservoir fishing trip and Zion Park Subway hiking adventure. The photo above shows The Subway. I shot a little video there but haven't had time to edit it.

I've Offended the Nudists
I've received two comments this week from nudists offended because my website has an old article saying it is sad that people get naked in public at the Hot Pots on Fifth Water. That stream has beautiful waterfalls and nice hot springs, but I choose not to take kids there because of the nudists. See my article and their comments. (Sorry, no photos.)

No FishBytes Next Week
I'll on the donor side of a little kidney transplant and so I'll be out of play for a few days. After that I'll have to sit around for a couple weeks as I recover. Well, I can sit around on my boat holding a fishing rod, so I won't be down too long. They say I'm not supposed to lift more than 15 pounds for two weeks. Ok, I'll try hard not to catch anything over that weight limit.

I've been out of balance this spring and summer, doing too much hiking and not enough fishing. I'll repent and do better, getting reacquainted with my boat.

Fishing Overview
Fly fishing continues to be good on most streams. A wide variety of insects are hatching and there is no single go-to pattern - the best bugs vary from stream to stream and day to day. Often Green Drakes draw attention this time of year but so far they have been sparse. Crickets are working on the Green and on some waters. Hoppers are getting bigger and will soon become a factor. Meanwhile, experiment and enjoy diverse fishing.

Some quality streams open this Saturday. Other good streams have been open but are lesser-know. Try places like Upper Fish Creek, The West Fork of the Duchesne, Strawberry River, Antimony Creek and many others.

Trout are moving deeper in our reservoirs. Shore fishing will be less productive now and anglers will need to use techniques that get baits deep. Troll with downriggers or leaded line, use pop gear or still fish deep using baits. Float tubers often do well near inlets (where streams bring in cooler water). The early morning and late evening hours are now the most productive.

Uinta Mountain lakes are mostly accessible - now's the time to get into the high country. Fishing is usually very good in both lakes and streams. Small flies work well, mosquitoes, ants and Renegades are popular patterns. Small lures also work well. If one water is slow, there is usually another option just around the corner.

Lake Powell striper fishing continues to be good and getting better. Surface boils are now common. Action should continue to be good into September. After that, striper fishing may decline but smallmouth fishing will improve. Watch wayneswords.com for the latest information.

Wildfire Season
Part of the West Rim Trail is Zion Park is closed because of a nearby wildlife. Details. For info on fires in Utah see this website. Take care to stay safe and don't contribute to the fire problem.
