What's New
Hunting Special
Castle Valley Outdoors is offering 20% off hunts in December and January. They have a very nice lodge on a large ranch in Castle Valley (south of Price). They specialize in guided wingshooting for pheasants and other upland game birds. They are a top-notch outfit. I know the people there and recommend them. - Dave Webb

The Coming Weeks
Kokanee fishing will peak during the next couple weeks at Flaming Gorge and a few other waters.

Hopper fishing will be very good on area streams through September.

Lake Powell striper boils will probably continue strong through September.

Strawberry trout fishing will improve dramatically as the water cools a bit - probably by mid-September. Fishing is usually red hot in October.

Flaming Gorge lake trout fishing peaks in mid-October, as the big fish stage near spawning areas.

Brown trout fishing is very good in our streams during late October and November, as the fish prepare to spawn in shallow areas.

Walleye fishing can be great during stormy fall weather. On average, the biggest walleye of the year are caught during fall.

Fishing Overview
Fly fishing is good to great on most streams. Hopper patterns are hot right now, but many other bugs also work. Water conditions are excellent. Get out and enjoy these final days of summer.

Lake Powell striper fishing continues to be very good. Surface feeding fish continue to boil during the early morning hours. The hot spots vary from day to day, so watch forum posts for the most recent info. DWR Lake Powell project leader Wayne Gustaveson continues to gush about fishing success:

"Striper size is increasing daily. They started the year at about 2.5 pounds and now are close to 4 pounds and 23 inches long. They are strong and thick bodied. The fillets are excellent and perhaps the best I have ever seen. This is a year to remember for striper fishing. The good news - It will only get better as water temperatures continue to cool." Read Wayne's fishing report.

High mountain lakes offer very good trout fishing. This is prime time to fish the Uintas, Skyline Drive, Boulder Mountain and other high waters.

Strawberry and our other major trout waters are spotty. They can be very good if you put the right lure into the right spot, but most fishers report only fair action. Reservoir fishing will pick up as we move into September and water temperatures start to cool.

Catfish action is very good at Utah Lake, Willard Bay, Lake Powell and many other waters.
