What's New
Labor Day Weekend
I enjoyed two great hikes over the holiday weekend:

- Kanarra Creek, near Cedar City, provided a fun, easy slot canyon hike. Here are photos and a great video clip.

- Right Fork of North Creek in Zion was a long, strenuous hike to see two beautiful waterfalls. Photos.

Lake Powell Shad Rally:
Lake Powell fishing enthusiasts will gather Sept 18-19 at Stanton Creek, near Bullfrog. The will fish, learn, eat and socialize, as they catch stripers. I hope to be there, if I can clear a couple things off my schedule.

One-Fly Fishing Tournament
Trout Unlimited is having a Green River one-fly fishing tournament on Sept 17-19, to raise money to help fund coldwater fisheries projects. Participation will be limited to 15 teams of up to five anglers each. One fly per person - strictly catch and release. Details.

Strawberry Wildlife Festival will be Sept 18-19 at the US Forest Service visitor center at Strawberry Reservoir. Strawberry is not only one of the most famous fisheries in the West, it is also home to over 50 birds of prey, foxes, coyotes, song birds, moose, elk and many other types of wildlife. Visitors will be able to see thousands of bright red kokanee salmon migrating up Strawberry River right outside the Forest Service Visitor Center. There will be fishing seminars, displays, booths, music, food and fun.

Fishing Overview
Warm weather is expected through the weekend - we're still in a summer pattern. It's very pleasant to fish, hike and camp, but fishing will definately improve as soon as we get a little fall weather. That will come soon enough. Meanwhile, get out and enjoy.

Lake Powell is still a hot spot, with lots of reports of boiling stripers. Surface fishing should continue to be good for a few more weeks. Smallmouth, bluegill and catfish action is also very good.

Fly fishing continues to be good on area streams. Terrestrials (hoppers and ants) are usually the most productive, but there are still other bugs out. Fish like it is August, not September.

Strawberry has been good lately, and will get even better as temperatures cool. Look for The 'Berry to offer great fishing from now until snow blocks access. Jigs tipped with bait have worked well when cast or jigged from boats. People trolling lures and still fishing bait are also taking fish.

At Strawberry and other reservoirs, fly fishers are doing well float tubing in the evening. Put on a woolly bugger, let out a lot of line and then just kick slowly around a bay.

Shore fishing has started to pick up at our trout reservoirs, and that action will improve as temperatures cool and fish move closer to shore.
