Events
Utah's Wildlife Board will meet on Oct 1 to consider an assortment of items -- including possible fishing changes for 2010. The meeting begins at 8 a.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. Details.

Special Regional Advisory Council meetings have been scheduled to seek public input on bison management in Utah. The number of bison on the Henry Mountains needs to be reduced. Should the state move more bison from the Henry Mountains to the Book Cliffs? Or should the state offer more hunting permits? Come to one of the meetings and share your viewpoint. Details.

National Public Lands Day, Sept 26. Entrance fees will be waived at many National Parks, National Forests, Utah State Parks and other public lands. Volunteers will help build trails and participate in other improvement projects. See places to get involved in Utah.

Fishing Overview
Fall conditions have settled over Utah's fishing waters. In general, fall brings improved fishing all around Utah. Morning temperatures are now crisp, especially up in the mountains. Afternoons are beautiful and mild, but evenings become chilly when the sun goes down.

This weekend we will see summer-like temperatures but next week will bring cooler, stormy weather. Dress in layers and be prepared for anything if you head into the high country.

Fly fishing remains great on most of our trout streams. Hoppers, ants and beetles continue to produce consistent fishing. There are still some PMD and Caddis around but those hatches will probably fade within in the next couple weeks. Nymphs are working well when fished deep.

Steve Schmidt gives this description: "Fall weather doesn't get any better than what it is right now; cool mornings and evenings with spectacular afternoons in between. Some aspen and cottonwoods are starting to join the scrub oak and big tooth maples in radiant fall color. Our rivers' browns are showing their beautiful fall colors as well. We hope you are putting some fall time aside to get out (and) enjoy what is left of one of the best fishing years that I can remember. We should have a good month and a half left in the season before we begin winters transition." Read Steve's fishing report.

Lake trout fishing picks up at this time of year, at Flaming Gorge, Bear Lake and Fish Lake. Lake trout are finicky and fishing is never fast, but the chance for a trophy makes the effort worthwhile. At Flaming Gorge, Linwood Bay is closed to fishing between official sunset and sunrise, from Oct 15 until 6 am on the second Saturday of December. Lake trout congregate in that area and spawn at night. We have a great article about fall fishing for lake trout.

At Strawberry and other trout waters, fish are starting to feed in shallow areas where they can be caught from shore. Boat, tube and shore fishing is good and will get better as fall progresses.

Lake Powell continues to offer very good fishing for stripers, smallmouth, largemouth, bluegill and catfish. Striper boils are random and unpredictable. Most fish are now being caught beneath the surface, but be prepared for top-water action. Good fishing will continue for another month or so at Powell.
